There's loads and loads of ways to customise the way that LR handles files. At one end of the scale you can have it set up to create 1:1 previews upon import and to save them in memory forever, at the other end you can tell it to build only thumbnails and delete everything upon close. Have a dig around in your dad's preferences file. How fast or slow LR goes depends on how you use it... If you're a fashion shooter who shoots a...

I'm with kalniel - don't sharpen it any more. That softness gives it a nice mysterious dreamy quality which goes so well with those beautiful colours

That is an interesting effect! The spot lights were moving around which didn't help. That and it takes my camera a couple of seconds to auto-focus with the flash. I'll keep experimenting next time.

Thanks Brammers. That explains it clearly thank you. I've been able to reduce the LRCAT a little by optimising and I may consider altering preferences for previews in time. For now its working well, despite the space taken up. BTW my Dad has a 5D mk II & 40D (and an itchy trigger finger!). I only wish he'd use the same finger for the Delete key - he keeps too many files! What size is your LRCAT? - I would imagine it could...

Why 4:3 ratio? Do you see yourself upgrading to a dSLR in time?
I've got a Philips which is excellent and will do everything you ask. They do a variety of sizes. They have a 10 inch version ( link )

Your lens should have no problem with this and the lighting looks adequate to acquire focus..
Use the center focus point and aim for an area with high contrast but about the same focal plane as the face (if you can't get focus on the face)
They look like horrible spotlights though; like even if you got the face at the right exposure, everything else would be near pitch black.
