Thanks. I guess I should be expecting that much noise then. It was a really horrible overcast day when those photos were taken and I needed a high shutter speed as I didn't have my tripod and was getting too much camera shake at lower shutter speeds. Out of interest, how did you know how many stops underexposed the shots were? Does it display that information in the metadata somewhere?

Experiment is the short answer. It's not too hard once you find out what settings work. Use full manual. Generally, an exposure of about 1 to 2 seconds works well. It depends when you start the exposure - do you want some fizz with the bang? Or just a puff ball? That's when timing comes into it. Start the shot as the rocket goes up for a stem, or start it as it explodes for a ball of colour. Setting the exposure to...

1) Any modern camera will suit your uses, within budget, no problem. They all have the equivalent of dual kit lenses available.
2) The quality of all modern cameras is as close to equal as to make no real world difference with sensible lenses.
3) All modern cameras feel completely different from each other! Get to a shop and try them.

I don't see why your sensor should be any noisier than when you first got it!! I would look at using Neat Image or Noise Ninja if you want to reduce the noise in the image.

go to a shop & handle them - buy the 1 that fits your hand best & you find easiest to operate as at the entry level all current production DSLRs pretty much all have similar image quality.
of course if you have friends whose gear that you can borrow that's a plus point towards getting that system.
as far a Sonys go the older A200/A300/A350 are somewhat bigger & heavier than the facelifted ...

Got one, use it every time I take the camera (old Point and click) out on the bike.
Go for the bigger one as the smaller one doesn't quite manage to hold a normal p-a-c upright enough.
Portable, tiny, cheap, well worth the money.

High ISO with DSLRs is awesome, you did really well and they're great shots. The 1000+ ones have lost a bit of colour/contrast which is completely expected and they still look nice, but you could probably get away with boosting the saturation and contrast to compensate.
