See the sticky on convergence problems at the top of the Hitachi forum. The ICs are usually soldered to a heat sink. They may not be the only thing wrong - there could also be blown resistors.

So I've been going through the posts and realize too much "overscan" is the problem. I've downloaded the service manual and entered the service menu of the TV. There does not appear to be any adjustment for overscan, vertical, or horizontal strech. There was no or very little overscan before the firmware update and now I would say it is about 15%.
