marlin 308 express
Published (2009-12-18 11:01:00)
Try a different bullet if you are getting that much meat loss, the 308 marlin is no meat basher by any means, it is a step up from the 308 win. and falls short of the performance that the 7mm mag offers. maybe a more controlled expansion bullet is in order.. I have seen some hefty holes by many different cals especially the 7mm mag, its all in bullet selection...

.243, 30-06, .308 and WHAT ELSE?...
Published (2009-12-17 21:38:00)
I would personally suggest an older Browning. My family, as a whole, owns so many firearms that we could open a gun shop. The one gun that EVERYONE envies is an older Belgium-made Browning Semi-auto in .243. That rifle has served three generations of our family's hunters, and will likely serve several more if the Good Lord is willing. Not only is this rifle older than dirt, it's also a very accurate rifle...not to mention, an example...

24" or 26" Barrel
Published (2009-12-19 14:54:00)
Depends on hunting scenario. Short range walk & stalk: lightweight 24" or less. Long range heavyweight 26" or more. But then, from a South African viewpoint, the Whelen is not really a long range cartridge. So go for the 24".

Moose and deer ammo in 6,5x55/.264

Piper-T, I have killed quite a few deer, caribou, and exactly one bull moose with the 6.5x55 using the Sierra I noted above. All expanded well and did their job.

Black bears are not hard to kill, your 30-06 will do just fine and virtually any 150 to 180 gr. bullet will do the job.

Well the .308 and the .30-06 are very close to being the same thing. So for the fourth gun I'd look for something like a .243.
