I've seen far more problems from dogs too young than dogs too old. I like starting the retrieving breeds at 6-8 months in force. My ideal is eight months. At eight months you can apply the pressure a dog need where at 6 many are just babies. Pointing dogs are a little different. I like them older, say 10-14 months. I like them to have a season running wild in the fields or woods when I start them. I like starting them in Dec or Jan over...

Should i keep them an let them breed for my own stock? I now have the set up but don`t no what do with it. Thought i was ahead of the game guess not...I was hoping to keep about 6 birds that home well an use a thrown dead bird for the retrieve so i didn`t have too keep buying new birds. That way i always have birds on hand for training in the evening on the table. Trying to get her broke to shot, i`m figuring its going to take alot birds.. Can...

There are some breeds that do not fly well but a regular pigeon or a homer will fly for several miles even when out of condition. Birds that are not flown as young birds never seem to be as good but are more than adequate for a training program. I have birds I have bought as young birds that are used as breeders but they still fly very well. Birds do get too fat but they still should fly well for training if they are homers. Ezzy

If you really want to test your dog, buy some rollers/tumblers.

He was introduced to birds before the trainer and was birdy. He has since been worked on live and frozen pigeons and remains birdy. He is 8mo old.

Thanks for all the information. I am all ears, and wanted to know what to expect and I can certainly see I do need to go at the dogs pace and let her dictate her training instead of me thinking it needs to be done at a certain time. I really enjoy all the help, and will certainly ask more questions in the future when problems to arise as I can see there are a lot of helpful people on here. Thanks again for your time and information, I really...

You've never obedience trained him to COME to you. If he came whenever you commanded HERE, you'd have no problem getting the bird. Obedience train him.

Teach him whoa and make him stand there while you pick the ball up. He's doing it because it's fun and you're letting him get away with it.

Rod~Sounds like your doing a good job. Make sure she can see those dogs working those birds when she's staked out. I wouldn't use the sit command till after she's whoa broke, or you may find that she wants to sit on whoa. Heel is probably something you want to hold off on too, or you might take some out of the run out of her before she realizes she has it. It's a good command to have, but I'd ...

Dogs that freeze up are not uncommon. This is where having a talented, experienced pro has all of its benefits as they can read the dog well enough to know whether the dog is just being stubborn or is really mentally shutting down; and there is a big difference. Without knowing the pro and his techniques, and seeing the dog it's impossible for anyone to provide meaningful advice. At this point...

LOl LOL Very funny and I've been there. When you go to the bird auction/stockyards to buy birds sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't. I never buy mature homers because they home right back to the seller. I'm sure he resells them every week. I'm told only birds born in your coop will home to you. I buy birds that look like wild pigeons. Sometimes they are. I also buy maybe 20 birds a...

My first question is what is "gun leary"..Right now I'm concerned about your Shorthair. What are you doing with him to make sure he is comfortable around the gun?..That makes me suspect on if your EP has been introduced to the gun. How old is the pointer? What kind of training has he had? How much pressure has he had? Have you shot birds over him before?.In my opinion, catching a bird is ...
