Yep I'll not ever be back for the opener again.......had better luck last year late season.....and not as much...

Kansas or Oklahoma for quail. South Dakota for Pheasants. SD is going to raise the limit to 5 rooster after Dec 5 for the remainder of season.

Quail Time of Day?
Published (2009-12-02 22:07:00)
Perdido wrote: DO NOT hunt the Quail after about 3:00 pm! The birds must have time to covey up and if you pursue the birds after the initial flush they will be widely scattered. If they don't have time to covey up they will succumb to the cold during the night. Get there early, real early and you can catch them before they break and go to feed out of cover. It is easier for your dogs to find and pin them if you catch them on the roost...

Chip, Are you gay? The artsy thing is a little over the top for me. I could get beat up for taking a picture like that from where I am from. If you come to this part of Iowa to hunt, leave your Picaso photography in Illinois where it belongs!!! I do like the way those two hounds look!! What kind of pedigree is behind Digger?

Bill, I'm guessing you'll do better. They were just starting to pick beans when we were there, 4 weeks ago. I have friends hunting S.D. now and they said the beans, sunflowers, & 1/2 the corn is in with more coming down each day. Good luck & post up when you return. John

Hey Dave: Looks like a good day. Is that a cocker/Jack RT cross? May be a good breed to keep going. Thanks for sharing. Rick

I'm hunting waterfowl with 3 years old labrador. Terrain - abandond fields and small creeks. Temperature - around 30. Do I need vest for the dog? If so, what would you recommend? Or, what to stay away from? Respectfully Dmitry

It really doesnt matter, although it does take a male and female to tango. If you are wanting to seriously campaign a dog then I would go with the male, no heat cylces or puppies to contend with. Breeding has lots of nice names in it, but appears to be more of a melting pot than anything.
