I may be wrong, but I think an AR type rifle in 308 would have a wider range of ammo available for it because I believe the M1A is intended to use 7.62 NATO spec ammo. As for the cheaper mags, it all depends on what lower you use on the AR, it seems that everyone who makes an 308 AR uses their own style of mags.
