K- thank you :) it's been very hard but I am hopeful that soon I'll be pg again...it was such a weird thing...I didn't have any issues at all with my other kiddos (unless you count some high blood pressure late in the pregnancy).? We really have no idea what caused this but the Dr. said it was abruption...still...*sigh*

SPD with delayed speech

My 2 year old has SPD - sensory seeker.? He is not saying very much.? Right now, we have OT - she doesn't feel he needs speech therapy right now because we are trying to get him to focus on speech through his activities.? He understands things very well, but doesn't say alot.? The OT explained his brain is wired differently and we need to focus on making the connections with words through play.? One reason I feel he is delayed is...

Ever envy other people/ families?

I understand what you mean. My SID child is 5.5 years old and in Kindergarten. He is doing so well acedemically but has had "bad" days about 85% of the time due to hitting, tantrums, spitting (I was suprised at this b/c it was a new thing that I hadn't seen at home) and things of this nature. He has had a lot of trouble forming peer relationships and doesn't do well with group or paired activities. It breaks my heart...

Thanks everyone we are having a full diagnostic work up done - the school brought up the possibility of ADHD and I will not medicate her due to her bio family having a history of mental illness that can be triggered by many ADHD meds - if the issues are latent. we had seen a therapist who labled dd as bipolar after meeting her for the first time - spent all of 10 min. in the office before she gave her the lable and then refused to put...

MomOfSweetPea...how delayed was your son's speech? My son is 21 months old now and still only says a handful of words.? he talks all the time, but we just can't udnerstand what he's saying.? My pedi told me at his 18 month checkup he should have an explosion of words soon...i'm not sure what counts as an "explosion."? He hasn't been officially diagnosed with OT, but has an eval scheduled for Dec.? This whole...

Joshie's "mild" but we can always see a difference when we go places between him and the other children.? Makes me sad at church when he goes absolutely nuts and stuff when the other kids are so calm...? I get jealous of families with kids they can control, but I'm getting the swing of it with time and patience.? It's a normal feeling, please don't beat yourself up!?

Maybe I can help.? My son had mild to moderate SPD, but he is 6 now.? Most behaviours gradually went away at age 5, but it did come out again when he started Kindergarten, ie... sensory seeking behaviour like licking things and people, bumping into people and things, falling on purpose, biting (can't believe he did that), breaking pencils, cuts up his workbook, etc... When he was in preschool, I couldn't take him to the beach,...

It's natural to feel envious of other families but remember they might be dealing with their own issues. ?It took me awhile not to feel jealous of other families. ?The little things they took for granted were a huge struggle for us. ?But slowly she is adapting and life is becoming easier. ?Now I consider SPD a blessing because it's taught me so much more than if it wasn't in our lives. ?

yep, my DS has a speech disorder. It falls under the SPD as well. He has global dyspraxia and it affects his speech, thought, and motor skills. he's also a seeker most of the time although he displays some hypo and hyper issues as well.
Don't let them diagnose him as ASD if you feel he doesn't have an ASD. until SPD gets a spot in the diagnositc Manual, it will forever be either ...

The name was changed to spd because people were confusing sid with sids so sid/spd same thing.
My son has seeks certain things like smells, strong tastes, deep pressure, movement but avoids loud noises, bright lights, sticky things, light touch, and certain food textures and absolutely HATES baths, nail clipping, haircuts/hairwashing, and MUST have socks and shoes on at all times

I completely understand what you are dealing with. My ds doesn't eat normally either. We have actually requested a feeding specialist for him and yet the speech therapist who is also a feeding specialist says there's nothing wrong with his eating. We do make him try to eat what we are eating in some form or another. Like tonight we had rice & chicken with peas. He will usually eat some of ...

Dont get me wrong, I am so thankful for my healthy little girl. But, I see other parents talk about taking their kids to the park, mall, library, etc to play and I cant help but feel envious/ sad sometimes. Going to the park usually isnt much fun. My dd only wants to swing, which is fine and is good for her therapy. Shes terrified of equipment though. I end up doing most of the work for her to ...

I find myself actually wondering at times if its OT or out growing it. then I realize when dd's having a bad day and we do some of the sensory diet, her mood improves. I know then that its the OT. :-)

I think that all kids exhibit some of the signs on the list. It's when they have so many of them or at a level severe enough that it interferes with their functioning that it becomes a problem.

Im not even sure what to think about the whole ticket thing. Is there anyway his teachers will work with him or be a little more lenient with him? Im not really saying ask for special treatment, but maybe work out how many tickets things cost. Like for therapy, why should he have to pay tickets for that? This class lesson is not teaching him a thing. Poor kiddo. Id be stressed out too!
