when to pump and dump?
Published (2009-12-19 00:00:00)
Honestly most doctors and pharmacists don't really know so they err on the side of "dump and pump". It is not necessary for most drugs. Post which ones you took and we can link you to Dr. Hale's page. He is considered the leading expert.

hmmmm...I'm not sure...from your siggy it looks like your little one is almost 4 months old, so it seems unlikely to be something you are eating at this point....but for the sake of being thorough...have you started to eat anything new lately?? It also seems a little old to be developing reflux. R u sure she is crying b/c her tummy is upset and not crying b/c of another reason?? I had a spurt where my little one seemed to spit up alot...

Nursing time shorter now, is...
Published (2009-12-18 00:00:00)
I remember having to nurse my newborn for hours in the earlier weeks, he either just falls asleep or nibble on forever but this past weeks, his nursing time seems to shorten, 15 mins tops and he will automatically spit my nipple out. Is this normal? I was worried that given he has shorten nursing time, he might not be getting adequate milk.? I am constantly thinking that he isn't getting enough milk because he hates hates my breast....

He nurses anywhere between 6-10 times a day if not a couple more. And yea they told me to use a pacifier because all he wanted to do was suck but he only takes the pacifier when he is not hungry. When he is hungry he will spit it right out...

DH wants DD to be a FF baby
Published (2009-12-18 00:00:00)
Keep trying! Before I even had my son my boyfriend didn't want me to breastfeed, but I did it! He was going through a growth spurt around a time when we were on a trip that was 12 hours from home for a week.. and it was the first time I was meeting this part of his family, but shane wanted to nurse CONSTANTLY. They even said something about it, jokingly..but I apologized and said he was going through a growth spurt, and I had to catch...

Published (2009-12-19 00:00:00)
Hot showers don't help much when I'm engorged. I have to pump a little first. There's a variety of freezer bags made specifically for breast milk. I started pumping around 2 weeks but didn't introduce a bottle until 4 weeks when BFing was established. I also went back to the hospital a couple times and met with a Lactation Consultant in the Women's Center for advice. I tried to contact LLL, but the leader never called...

If you have to pump then just freeze! The shower is a good idea but they also have something called a Latch Assist made by Lansinoh. I found it at Walmart and Walgreens. It's kinda like the aspirator you got from the hospital for LOs nose - it has a bulb at one end and the other looks like a horn (?). It's meant to draw the nipple out to make it easier to latch on to. That might help. Best advice - contact a lactation consultant or...

It's normal for them to decrease the time/amount they spend at the breast when you start solids... I still nurse my DD at least 8x/day (24hrs) and she has solids 2x/day but I think it really depends on the baby. I know it's normal to cut back on nursing with solids though, as long as your babe is thriving and having plenty of wet/poopy diapers, I wouldn't worry... and as they get older they get ...

How old is your baby?
I would pump and freeze it if you can. Try taking a hot shower. that will get your milk to let down and get rid of a little in the shower. Try to nurse your baby right after the hot shower.

So I had planned to EBF, but that's just not working out. Right now I'm on maternity leave (back to work beginning of Jan.) and I BF as much as I can, which usually ends up being all day and most of the night. By 11ish, though, even though I've been trying to "cluster feed," ...

Yes you can and should continue to nurse. Feel better! If you end up on antibiotics make sure to take probiotics also to avoid thrush.

No your milk won't dry up. All womans periods come back at different times. I breastfed and was one if the lucky ones my monthly friend didn't show up till 3 days before dds first bday.

I haven't had this problem - hell, LO still poops several times a day! But my friend's little girl does. They insert a thermometer just a teeny tiny bit into her bum. And she usually lets go after that. Seriously, just like a 1/4 inch or so. It doesn't take much, she says.

Hi Tammy,
My advice is to call a lactation consultant right away. The LC can weigh your baby before nursing and immediately after to see how much milk transfer he's getting and determine if there is low supply. Which medication did your ob call in for you? I have some experience with domperidone and it works very well, but you should try other things first, such as pumping, even the SNS ...

I went throught this with my DD right after she was born. She would scream/cry, have horrible gas, sometimes vomit. Her ped. wasn't very helpful with this issue, so through my own internet searches I thought about a milk protein allergy. I just cut out obvious dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt) and slowly she started to get better! The diff. was like night and day!
Usually babies outgrow this...I ...

Lindsey - absolutely! Colostrum is what your baby needs until the milk comes in. It's very thick and loaded with antibodies and other nutrients that your LO needs.
OP - I found warm compresses helped me when my milk came in. My breasts were rock hard and it was difficult to get my LO to latch. By putting warm washcloths on them, it helped the milk "release" and I was able to get my LO ...

Oh and it makes me really upset when DH says life would be easier if he could nurse. That DD would always be statified. In other words he would be a better nurser then me.. lol he would kill me if he know I told BBC ladies this!

I wouldn't be offended at all, even though I wasn't always comfortable nursing in different situations, I had a nursing cover in my diaper bag and knew it was an option if needed. I wouldn't worry about it, I think it's a great gift!

Babies can go for days without a BM. I remember with DS he would go 5-7 days - not often but at times. It doesn't hurt to call and talk to the nurse at your DD's Pedi's office. But I would not be too concerned, yet.
