Dreaming of a Golden Xmas...

Mine have their own stocking cats included. I will have to get two new ones for Pawley and Daisy. They get their own presents wrapped and a special dinner on Christmas. This will be a sad Christmas though without my Beau.

Dew Claws
Published (2009-11-27 23:39:00)
All my dogs except for my Whippet (show breeder) have theirs. Funny, I was just going to post this question! You beat me to it. I clip/grind my dogs' dewclaws down to nothing, almost flush with the pad, and I've never ever had a dog get a dewclaw injury, even running in the woods and lure coursing and so forth.

I agree momtoMax. A puncture wound will need extra care over a simple scraped foot or something like that. Puncture wounds keep the bacteria in them, which is what makes them so dangerous. I also have 3 very healthy dogs with no other immune issues who are in great physical shape and eat a premium kibble, but I don't play around with a puncture wound!

Dew Claws
Published (2009-11-28 09:46:00)
I agree, dewclaws are a pain when it comes to keeping the nail short. It's a hard angle to get at. With Hank I started using a Dremel which is much easier than trying to clip. Over the years, non of my dogs have had any tearing problems. The peanutbutter-on-the-fridge-door idea worked great!! Thank you to whom ever suggested it.

Molson has a TON of stuff on his Christmas list, but he was a good boy this year so there's a good chance that he'll get most of it. And if there's something Santa misses, his 1st birthday is Jan 18th so we might get him the leftovers then On his list... - A nylabone chew toy - Matching collar and leash - Stuffed animals - Bully Sticks - Antlers - Treats - Booties - Day at the spa

"Dogs 101" Espisode on...
Published (2009-11-27 18:21:00)
we hang nametags on our dog suites that have the dog's name, breed, and owner's name in very large, prominent letters. For "mutts", I label the breed "American Bitsa" (as in, bitsa this, bitsa that). The owners are usually tickled. Sometimes I use "All American Dog" for variety. The owners are usually tickled by that one, too. For designer breeds, I label it...

Prong & Choke collars? -...
Published (2009-11-25 14:41:00)
All collars can injure a dog if they're used improperly. That goes double for chokes and prongs, though it's completely possible to hurt a dog with a simple flat buckle collar. It's best to use training, not equipment, to control a dog. Equipment can be a backup or an aid, but it's no substitute for teaching dogs how to take interruptions from you, how to focus on commands, and how to offer a loose leash.

Most Field breeders remove them to prevent future injury.
With Conformation breeders, some remove them some do not, it's just personal preference.

You are are mean!! Not really.... If her kids don't know where them babies come from she is going to have a lot more to worry about than puppies. I do hope she takes that poor dog to the vets....she is the one that is most important now.

Poor baby. Sure hope he is OK.

Let the breeder do it!!!!! No one knows the puppies better, and after living with/caring for, and evaluating puppies, breeders are much better equipped to make a good, life-long placement. It is SO important that the right puppy goes to the right home...
*Disclaimer - I'm not a fan of puppies as "surprises" for people for the same reason - the dog HAS to right the person, and I'm definately...

Lots of treats. It seems like when they KNOW I have treats in my pocket they behave a lot better. Once I tried walking without anything and I barely made it down my street before having to turn around.
Sometimes my husband and I will each walk one, and that goes well without treats.

I agree. She may look at it that she is "helping" these pups but she is also enabling puppy mills. You could ask her about it and tell her your opinion. If you change vets, I think she should know why.
