Thank you, I do make Layla and Hurley sit before eating, going out etc. Not Dream, she is old and arthritic (two ACL repairs among other things) - it seems cruel to do that to her. We have been stepping in between Layla and Dream, we don't want Dream to fall or get hurt. Usually all I need to do is call Layla, she will come (not outside though, that is new too LOL). they sure are a mystery............

You could see a change in thyroid over a 4-6 week period, certainly. I wonder also, if making her last all the time is making the problem worse? Much as we would like to, we cannot decide who is alpha and who is not. We have to let the dogs decide that, and then help to enforce it, without allowing bullying. A good alpha does not have to bully and a bad alpha should not be allowed to.

One thing that couldnt hurt is strengthening your presence with all the dogs. Ask everyone to sit or lie down before meals, sit before going out etc- evenhandedly, but so they notice they're being asked to do more for you. For a while, Tango was tackling Tally way too hard for my liking. I started redirecting her to a stick on a walk or a toy inside. It worked pretty well, and now she censors herself and veers off from her tackle midstep...

The remote in my bedroom is held together with duct tape. i even went to Comcast and got a new one but the buttons just dont push as easy as the chewed one. So the brand new one has been sitting in the nightstand for over a year. Maybe longer. You know universal remotes start at like $9 at Wal-Mart? lol

I wasn't aware that aggressive behavior was in their genes. The strange thing is he has been so good with all of the kids up until lately. This is my 3rd golden. All have been around kids without a problem. Frankly, I have never heard of a golden being that aggressive just all of a sudden. Sometimes goldens are so human when it comes to getting their feelings hurt, its scary. He also has his own cat that he plays with. During their...

I think I would have the full panel thyroid test done. And after that if it comes out normal (not low normal) then bring in a behaviorist to check her behavior.

I am thinking that it is maybe the food? Maybe a tainted bag? I am feeding both dogs the Natural Balance Premium and both are sick. I have had no luck with the expensive brands...so I guess I will try something new. This has got to stop though.

Hmmm...what about putting a bell on his collar?? I would imagine it might give his "prey" a chance to hear him coming BEFORE it is too late? Just an idea...I am very sorry you are going through this, it must be horrible

All I've ever read is to have her give him high value treats like a snack (with you right there of course) and on an open hand if he gently takes treats...its a way to show him she isn't a threat & good things come from being around her. Even if it's a few bits of food throughout the day, it reinforces good things from her. Is he "fly biting" inthe air or atually going for her hand/arm? Doubt ...

It sounds like he might need more socializing, with lots of different dogs, so he can learn that not every other dog wants to play with him. A good dog park, or daycare would be a good idea.
Other than that, I would step in when the other dog says 'enough' and he ignores that. If he likes chasing a ball or playing with you, then that would be the time to start something to get him focused ...

Put something up there like some empty cans that will fall when he jumps up there. Some people have gotten a scat mat from someplace like Fosters & Smith. The only other thing is to put everything away.

I'm so sorry. It sounds like Ocean has an extremely high prey drive and you have managed it very well over the years. I don't know that he would do better in a different home because you know him well and know how to keep things from happening, in general. Surely better than someone new to him.

Welcome Tom. I'd like to start off by saying that I am no means an expert with aggression in dogs. IMO though, it sounds like you handled it very well. If this is the only problem you're having, and possibly I'm over simplifying the remedy, but I would just stop giving him knuckle bones.

oh, the chewing and the licking! My dear rat terrier (now deceased) was an incessant licker of his front paws. The vet told us it was probably an allergy or food sensitivity. We bought him special food, but the licking went on. Yes, especially annoying at night when you're trying to sleep and you keep hearing -- slurp slurp slurp. I feel bad now that he is gone, for all the times I banished ...

Can you feed him earlier in the evening? Eating that late in the evening might be part of the problem. Use the crate divider too will help.

Will you describe exactly what Layla is doing? Is she tackling/kncoking over? Growling/ hackles up?

I think you have a good plan. Baby steps and lots of happy talk seem to help shy dogs. I've also had the dog sit, stay, shake, or lay down when they seem to be afraid. Also give lots of praise and treats when they comply. This will help them. This will help her associate the noise with something positive.
