I like the S&W M&P357 and the HK P2000. I really want a Sig SP2022 in 357SIG as well. It's not polymer, but I love the P229 and P239.

I had a Springfield MC Operator a while back. Nice platform,
the finish on mine was crap. Chipped very easily. Springer refinished,
looked great when I got it back,.....then I sold it.

I don't know S&W's policy on sending parts. Just curious, is it a frame mounted firing pin or is it on the hammer?

Worked with two of them, kept the second.
They do use the Pre-Series 70 lockwork.
They're also the sharpest-edged 1911s I've ever fired. Well-done overall, but mine will have to be de- horned & re-finished before it's fired much more.

You can use shorts, but you'll likely need to hand-cycle the action.
Use the ammo that works best in both guns. Short answer; Mini mags.

I would look into Bushnell, they make some decent inexpensive red dot scopes.

It is going to be hard to really help. We are not you. We do not know what you are leaning more towards. Personally, I would probably recommend getting the STI Spartan. It is a fine 1911 according to Bac. I would not mind having one myself. My second choice would be to start a long-range AR build.

I love the 10/22, but the new Colt in 22LR is a good looking fun option. I don't have one, but I got to see my friends, says its great.

I live in a small apartment and would go to the handgun first.
Edit- Actually, if holing up, I'd rather have the shotgun, but the handgun is much easier to move around with if need be.

I don't see a problem. I am a collector. I get it from my dad. He collects antiques including guns and swords. For him it is more about finding the deal at a flea market or auction. You know, the joy of finding a Confederate gladius sword at a flea market for $125.
Here are a few pics of some of my dads collection.

Colt Single Action, 45 Long Colt.
Finest sidearm ever made.
I was 21 in 1974.
I'd give anything to have it back.

IMHO.... The same thing that keeps us all paying income taxes. It's the simple fact that the Federal Government has the resources to put us in prison if we don't pony up enough cash to pay for our "freedoms".
I don't believe for one second that any of the laws pertaining to NFA items have any basis with regard to protecting the public in any way. Rather... I see it more as an opportunity ...
