I know there are some grooming schools that you attend so you can become certified. I also know that groomers very often train people, but if it is a requirement in your state to be certified in order to groom, that won't work so well from a business standpoint. I have two Yorkies and I use a "soft" slicker for getting any matts out, and a pin brush for all over. I groom my Yorkies. There are a lot of good information on grooming on the net. I'd LOVE to have a boars bristle brush but they are so expensive and I haven't had the courage to buy one yet.

Hi and thanks..It's been a while since I posted this. Update: she still matts when her coat grows long. She is still full of curls and her coat does resemble a little puff ball. I try and keep her coat fairly short and that helps her and I to feel a lot better. I use a conditioning creme rinse spray on her and that helps things to go more smoothly as well.
