GON QUAIL HUNT AT APALACHEE WMA...
Published (2009-12-26 18:11:00)
We had a good hunt this morning at Apalachee. Sam, Candler, and I hunted for about 4 hours. In that time, we moved 3 coveys.... one of which had close to 30 birds. We shot 5 birds but lost one. Conditions were pretty good. Apalachee is beautiful place and I can't wait to get back down there. I didn't take many photos but here are a few. Adam

Thats a really nice looking setter! There are plenty of other WMAs to try out and right now woodcock is in which you are probably familiar with if you hunt grouse in Michigan. I do believe we are also going to set up a "GON" hunt at a WMA later in January.

I correct my pup with the e-collar. If she bumps a bird she gets corrected. I don't hit her hard, just hard enough that she remembers what she is doing. If she moves after a flush, she gets nicked every single time. The nice thing is it rarely ever happens anymore....... I trial my pup on occasion. If she has been on the chain gang for a long wait she almost always gets a little carried ...

Good luck on finding a "wild bird" hunt within a couple of hours of Atlanta, your best bet is gonna be to find a grouse guide in N.C. or contact a wild bird plantation in the Albany or Thomasville area, they auction off hunts at times for charity. I know Blue Springs Plantation in Albany was considering doing limited hunts, they are a great wild bird property, I heard it was gonna run a couple of...

First remember that it is a tip and should not be expected. If the guide just shows up and is not very cordial, lets the dogs have their way, and doesn't make the hunt better by his presence, don't feel like you have to tip him. Maybe he'll get the idea for the next guy... That said, I start at 10% of the cost of the hunt and go up if the service and dog work is exceptional.
