File Extraction, Opening Files
Published (2009-11-09 16:56:00)
Hi Guys, I have extracted a number of files from a laptop, (windows Vista), that would not boot. I am trying to open them on a PC, (Windows XP), but windows cannot open some because it does not know what program created it. Windows has directed me to a number of downloadable programs on the net probably well suited to this situation. Are there some better than others? Thanks

If the computer is less than a year old, it may be under warranty. You might want to check with HP and see what your options are.

comp freezing and trouble booting

We here at GTG do not advise the use of any Registry cleaner or optimizer program. A registry cleaner will not increase your system's speed or performance, and has the potential to break your registry to the point that your PC is no longer bootable. We strongly advise that people stay away from any of the registry cleaners out there. Go HERE to get more information about why registry cleaners aren't needed. Thanks to Sari for the...

That icon is when the OS is using a generic icon as it can not find the original program icon any longer. Usually this happens if you uninstall a program. Do the links still work?

Hi Jim, Welcome to GeeksToGo . I'm afraid to say that Alpha Antivirus is actually classed as Rouge Anti Virus, meaning it itself is actually an infection. Can you actually get into Safe Mode? You started to say you could be then wasn't sure if you actually got there or not, seems like you maybe didn't. Also you said you have inserted the repair ...

It looks like RAM problem again... A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time. NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest , if you can go with option A B. If you have only one RAM stick ...

First of all, can you please provide GeeksToGo your USB dongle's model name and its number? That would help the staff pretty much.

No ideas yet, huh? Maybe a little more info will trigger some responses. I noticed that a blue screen comes up right before Windows is about to start up and that's when the computer reverts to the Recovery Manager. Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks.
