I definitely prefer the manga when it comes to a series with more mature subject matter, such as is the case with Berserk or Gantz. There seems to be more freedom as far as what's allowed to be shown. Not just gore and the like, but the story is obviously given more time to be developed.

Goddammit, your preferences are making it hard for me to think of good recommendations. Normally I would say Evangelion, but if you don't like melodrama, then nah. Maybe Ergo Proxy? It might be a little too out there, but it's worth a shot. Samurai Champloo is excellent (directed by the same guy who did Bebop). Oh, and there's Fullmetal Alchemist, but beware of melodrama ...

Pretty much every Shonen series I've seen I've preferred the manga. It's not just the fillers, there always just seems to be something that is lost in translation.

Seishi Kishimoto hands down...666 Satan/Blazer Drive are good mangas... While he doesn't have the longest list of mangas, he is well established in my heart... His older (twin) brother (Masashi) is also good as well...Guess what he writes...(Hate me D, HATE ME!!!!)
