Seeing as no one else did, I am going to answer my own question in case it helps people in the future. Also, I am not saying this is the best/only way to earn scrap metal, but it's a pretty good one - it works in both normal play and hero mode. The below method nets about 12,200 scrap each time. k well im just putin out there that pretty much all the jak and daxter series are similar to ratchet and clank, but yes this game is pretty crappy and there's too many weapons, i liked when there were 4 guns, and the mods, now its more and its not like you can just choose to not use them because im in the middle of a battle and my main gun runs out of ammo, it automatically switches to the next ...

The easiest ones to miss are on top of the islands behind the Phantom Blade. In particular, fly over the large island from the side nearest the Phantom Blade, hugging the area boundary and you'll be able to see a difficult to find crystal on the islands upper rear.
