It's been a while. Don't worry about anything but the primary targets. You're probably doing it right, just no fast enough. There is nothing special you need to do. Just do what it tells you, and do it fast.

Patch is now through QA and should be out within three to four weeks, is
the latest news as far as I understand. That depends on the individual platform-holders but once Sony gets their finger out it should be out on 360 too.

Yes, there's a training mode where you can choose to fight up to 16 of any type of aircraft (although no mixed types) in any map and also choose your loadout, the weather conditions, starting altitude and choose to give yourself an altitude advantage or disadvantage over the enemy.

I have not played the game online, but I plan to. From
what people say it's pretty broken, but as long as you can get in a game with good people it can be fun. Though I also hear it's pretty dead. I can tell you though that I have no regrets just playing training matches every morning.

It's more than likely that the game has already begun. This game doesn't allow you to enter an ongoing game for some reason. If you can't find a lobby, make your own and wait for a little bit and you'll have a game in a few minutes.
