Knowing full well that much of what I find most exciting is not typical eye candy, and that context of a showing has a great influence on impressions, I don't expect much at all. So when I have a 15th rank or even #3, I'm shocked/pleased. For example - I don't think side by side that the first one would garner more respect than the 2nd, taking a vote from the masses - but to me the first is less common and more the challenge to...

OLD Buck & Me @ minus 10 degrees f I got to a ridge before daylight, my plan was to hike in about 1/2 mile to try and ambush some elk. Then I looked at the temperature -10 f , I looked in the back of the camera wagon at my snowshoes and then back at the temperature gauge, it had NOT warmed up in the last 42 seconds so I decided I would just park the camera wagon in some cedars and drink coffee and see if anything came into view. A...

Why these restrictions?
Published (2009-12-16 22:16:00)
Yes, sometimes I don't enter - because I am busy and don't have any spare time. OTOH, some of my best shots have been the result of adhering to a challenge date restriction requirement. Because it _makes_ me get out and do a shoot -- with a purpose and a defined subject. So, not necessarily a bad thing. You wil always have the good shots from days, weeks, months, and years gone by. I kind of like the impetus that the date...

You can stay in Twentynine Palms, Joshua Tree or Yucca Valley if you need a roof. You can also camp on a first come basis in many areas of the park. There are many places to shoot, so to list them would be difficult. One thing to do is go to google maps and look at the blue squares (Panoramio); and through everyones pictures you can see if that is an area that you would like to shoot as well. ...

You raised a very interesting question, manuaalitarkennus. What is art or creative work? The borderline is very fuzzy; a blank canvas or ordinary shovel has been accepted as art in some of the leading art museums in the world. Based on that interpretation basically anything presented in a new context or seen in a new way can be classified as art. You wrote "when one simply shoots what everyone ...

Your image didn't embed because you need to host the image somwhere, like Flickr or Pbase for it to work. Not sure you can embed directly from Picassa. In your sample, looks like the camera metered for the sky, which will render the tree underexposed and cause the lack of detail you're looking for. You will A) have to sacrifice the sky to expose the tree properly in a single shot. B) use a ...
