None of the cameras you listed are all that good at movies. They can all do it. But the GH1 is much better, even better than the 7d and d300s at movies. The GH1 is not as good at still images. It is more of a hybrid, which is good or bad depending on what you are looking for. I have owned the t1i and the d90 (still own the d90). The video out of the Canon is more useful. AF is slow and painful, but it is there. There are no manual controls....

Hood for D40?
Published (2009-12-17 23:35:00)
With the kit lens, the hood has to be designed for the widest focal length or in this case 18mm or it will vignet. The Nikon hood is designed correctly. Hoods are much better than filters because they actually do something.

Indeed, most DSLR's today will not be capable of good manual focusing as delivered from the manufacturer. The 'focusing' screens are just designed for viewing, not focusing. With a name like that, there can't be too many around and on the web and shooting photos. I googled him...

It might help to see a sample or tell us what time of day you are shooting. The worst time to shoot is when the sun is directly overhead and the best results will be within a couple of hours after sunrise and before sunset, referred to as the "golden hours". Having the sun at your back helps and never shoot towards the sun unless you are after a particular effect. When the sun is directly overhead it is difficult to get an even...

18-55mm kit lens VS 50mm prime lens
Published (2009-12-17 20:44:00)
Yes, it's the f/1.8 thing. The kit lens is pretty slow at 50mm, so with the f/1.8 lens you will get something like 3-4 times more light. Also, the prime lenses are usually better than the zoom lenses (higher resolution, less distortions, less CA). Of course, a lens at f/1.8 is not going to be very good for resolution, but if you step it down to something like f/5.4 it is going to be much sharper than the kit lens.

Price vs Ability vs Choice vs Genre
Published (2009-12-17 15:19:00)
Dradam is correct. EF lenses will fit on any body. EF-S lenses will only fit 1.6x crop bodies, e.g. 1000D, 500D, 50D, 7D. This is true for all manufacturers including 3rd party manufacturers such as Sigma, Tamron and Tokina. So called "digital" lenses (e.g. Canon EF-S) cannot be used on full frame bodies because the image that they produce does not cover the whole sensor area. With Canon the mount is slightly different so that you...

I'll be watching this thread with interest - we're looking at the exact same cameras. We've never used SLR's ourselves, so know there is a large but fun learning curve ahead. My opinion keeps swaying back and forth as I read, but I think I'm leaning toward the T1i, although I know we would probably be more than happy with either camera.

I only used the extensions tube way (but with my dedicated macro lens, to get even more magnification) and I think it is the best method, because it is easy to do, and you MIGHT be able to use camera AF. The extension tubes are not really that cheap, but when you will eventually get a real macro lens you will be able to use them with it too.

I think that almost every book on photography written in the last 40 years can offer you information and oportunities to learn. Now don't buy all of them (I guess there must be thousants!!), but borrowing (public library) or buying second hand for a few dymes is an option. Just skip all the darkroom talk. And do read at least one book that covers the digital part (histograms, sensors, PP). I ...

I got the 450d which is a great camera (although I am pretty disappointed with the live view mode). However, I got it just weeks before the 500D was released, had I known the 500d will be released and have video, I would have waited for it, it's nice to have video.

How many photographs have you taken so far with your new camera? I very strongly recommend that you do not buy accessories that you may use very rarely until you find that you have a need for them. Polarizing filters and, especially ND filters, are not things that you will use everyday. You may never use an ND filter. Go out and take photographs, then take more photographs, then take more ...

DSLRs do not really require special care, except for when changing the lenses, it is best to do it fast so that dust won't enter the camera. Other than that, they require the same care you would give to any other camera. And they are not scary monsters either, just play with them and experiment.

I can't comment on the other two cameras, because I'm not that familiar with them, but the Olympus E-620 is an excellent camera. It's very small and light, so should suit your wife's hands. The kit lenses are very good. The flip/tilt screen might end up being handier than you think. It works very well on high and low angle shots. I see you have some reservations about buying online. I'll wade in! It looks like you know what you want in terms of performance etc and also what you can't tolerate (lag, zoom, image quality ... etc). IMHO, you're asking a lot for a compact camera. When we start taking about "action shots", ... kids, animals, sports etc, nothing will compare with a DSLR, ... even a consumer level quality DSLR. If zoom capability is high on the criteria list, ...

You will need a sealed lens too, or else the water will ruin your lens but leave your camera body intact :) The lenses are pretty affected by high humidity, they can fungus growing inside, which will deteriorate the performance of the lens.

To me, a DSLR even by itself is a pretty big lump. If I'm carrying my DSLR, I notice the thing all the time. So I only take it when my primary activity is taking pictures. And then I generally take a tripod and 3 or 4 lenses (hey, if I'm going to be a beast of burden I may as well load up) and I take considerable time selecting my subject and then selecting a lens. Now this is not my idea of a ...
