Wow, what a giant pain! I feel for ya... All of my backups go onto twin/duplicate drives...BUT they are kept offline whenever I'm doing any maintainance on ANY drive. Just to avoid such situations. While it won't take the sting out of this event...it might be something to think about in future. Good luck.

Any point in a black studio?
Published (2009-12-03 23:25:00)
light control. My last studio was in a basement type setup and what wasn't black was dark gray, curtained off with black drapes, etc. the only light that hit the subject was the light you aimed at them. my current studio is all white with a light floor. some areas have muslins hanging. I have a very hard time doing low key - light bounces all over the place and creates more fill than I want most of the time. Great if you're shooting...

Primary photographer at wedding...

There's a world of difference between wanting to prepare your own meal at a restaurant and wanting to edit your own photos. In a restaurant you're in someone else's place of business and should be respectful of that. But in a wedding the photographer is present on your special day and should be respectful of that. Too many photographers think of it as their place of business, not your wedding. This lack of understanding is...

Why does noise matter if you are so far away your need a 300mm lens. And what kind of studio is so dim you need 6400? Just curious. BAK

It is amazing how one's online presence is SO PERSISTANT, and how we (often) are creatures of habit in the handles we select. Timberwolf - I do like San Francisco, and have relatives in several locations around the Bay area - although I'm happy just to visit, not live there...LOL BTW - Here in the midwest, a Bachelorette's Nite Out on the town is something rarely captured on camera (before cellphone cameras, of course). Are...

switching to MF?
Published (2009-12-03 12:06:00)
It is often said that there is an almost intangible quality to images from MF, even though technical measurements do not seem to reflect this, or even suggest that there is no benefit! I am pretty sure that this is the element you seek and, if you have the finances to support it, will not regret embarking on this path. Common sense suggests that you aren't going to get rubbish results through the equipment!! Although I'm sure you...

This is the third case I've heard about in as many months of a photographer loosing his entire business due to poor data management. You should always have an offline backup of your images, preferable stored somewhere offsite somewhere in case your office burns down. Additionally, and this is what got you, whenever doing any form of destructive maintenance (such as a disk format) you should disconnect any devices containing critical...

Wedding web site

I would be very interested to see some of your work from the 70's. You can always just scan and upload to photobucket or the like and post them here. If you are really the pioneer that you claim to be, you should be proud to post your work for all of us to see.

If you are pro in business then you need business insurance. This will cover you for liability should you damage something (clothing, car, scratch the floor when on location, etc), if a client should get hurt on your property or under your direction (falls off your posing stool). You then get gear coverage - lights, camera, computer, etc loss of income insurance, rental for replacements if ...

Sadly this is happening more and more, I was caught out a few months ago when I agreed to help a local Photographer who told me he may be late arriving to a wedding, he did not show at all until it was all over then admitted he had been shooting another wed. I got on very well with B&G and all the guests but afterwards (a couple of weeks) heard that B&G where very unhappy, this concerned me as I...

You might look into the colour management settings where you select a grey profile. On the other hand, I'd rather use the chanel mixer to convert the image to B/W. This lets you control the grey values.

Is it that different to 1.? or 2.? when it comes to DAM? It has been an amazing all in one for a long time and in that regard it has been ready for prime time for the last year. The reason I don't currently use 3 is that it will not upgrade my older catalogues. Yet.

Yes, they are useful. Add an elastic strap or bungi cord loop from the center column so you can "step on it" to add downward tension. This will help, since most cheap tripods have thin flimsy legs. Another (additional) technique is to place a "lead shot" bag on top of the lens, especially if a LONG lens...to help dampen the mirror flap vibration. You can also use mirror lockup And do ...

Unfortunately they made the same mistakes as ZenFolio did with coupons. Guess they only wanted to equal Zen instead of knocking them over. I don't get it, what is your point? It's your nephew, it's a freebie, send him a disk with the pictures on it. If your nephew and wife want an album, throw together a freebie from Walgreens.

Coordinators whom I ve come in touch with do just about everythig associated with the wedding, they help the bride decide on a theme, colors, flower arrangements etc., then make the arrangements for all and any props needed, the seating, the name/table tags the schedule of the cake cutting, food serving, and gathering up individuals for photo opps. In a nut shell they stay close to the bride ...

The only question is whether they fulfil the requirement/serve the purpose. If they do then there is no need to say anything and if they don't then cropping is surely not the issue. I would be interested to hear why you apparently think it is important.

Well you are definitely ready equipment wise! I would keep the 24-70 on the 5d II and 70-200 on the 50d. Take the 16-35 for wide angle shots of the service

wait till january to get the replacement - you're in the midst of the christmas shopping and shipping season and the workers are overloaded, overworked, tired, irritable, and many are temps that don't perhaps care as much as the ones that know they'll have jobs in January.

Why are you thinking of having a website in 1-2 years. Websites have been around for over 10 years now, in 2 years time something else will be invented. A new way to advertise your business, will you wait another 10 years to adopt this form of advertising. But then if you have been shooting since the early 70s surely the only thing you should be thinking of in 2 years time is retiring. By the ...

I think quite worthless above ISO 400 and up, 2 different type of cameras hard to compare, especially when you do not specify the usage. Michel
