I never use in-camera jpegs - always work from the RAW file. Perhaps that has a specific bearing on what others get compared to what I get? However, read on as I find his (Andrew Kelsall) methods unacceptable. I certainly do not see the degradation shown in that article. I would also suspect his problem was saving at different jpeg levels, which he mentions. I can certainly believe a loss when someone is daft enough to save at different...

Lightroom/W7 problems?
Published (2009-10-31 10:31:00)
Hey all. After upgrading my Vista 64 to W7 64 I am having a lot of random freezes...way more than ever with Vista. I only have LR installed, Nod32(which i am switching out for Microsoft Security Essentials), TrueImage and Windows Home Server installed. I am trying to eliminate what is causing the problem, but on multiple times LR is open when the freeze occurs . Also strangely when i fired up LR last night there was no catalog?..all the time...

It suppose to be a great card but I will try to see if it will hold 2 calibrations... Windows7 XP Mode Hardware Drivers

Hi Again, Happy to report that I e-mailed Ed Hamrick at VueScan, described the problem and sent a log. He responded very quickly and said that VueScan was having trouble communicating with the Epson scanner, not the Nikon 4000 as I had thought. He suggested unplugging the Epson scanner and restarting VueScan. I tried unplugging the USB cable but no luck. So, I unpugged the power cord from the scanner, restarted VueScan and re-plugged the...

...got my C Drive partitioned sized bigger. I already had a D: and E: partition on my drive and, stupid me, kept my primary partition set at 32G. Not big enough for Win7. I was quickly running out of disk space. Had to shift both D and E to the right and that left an empty space between C and D (used a boot utility to do this). I then let Win7 use up the space left to increase C to around 108G. Phew (took over two hours, but worth it; still...

Glad to see you got the Nikon scanner working. I have nothing to offer on the Epson or VueScan. I was sure pleased to come across that solution and glad to pass it along. Best of Luck to You Al

Not quite true. ianR wrote: > Yes, jpeg is a lossy format but that doesn't mean it MUST lose data, only that it will prioritize file size over accuracy if you want it to. It does lose information, no question of that. However, the lost information may not be visible. > The more you compress the more data is lost, not the more times you resave. It really only becomes noticeable around about the 87% mark though, whatever that...

Yes. Use widely supported lossless format like PNG if need to do multiple edits. Aristoc wrote: > I have photoshop 6. After editing a photo and opening and saving it several times as a JPEG/JPG am I going to lose some data/quality from the photo? >

Please do an "i7" search of this forum over the last two weeks for the answers to your questions. This subject has been discussed ad inifinitum. Also check Tom's Hardware (www.tomshardware.com) for their benchmark reports on the new i7 and i5 processor family in comparison to the i7 900 family.

Backup your data. Download Windows 7 drivers from your system's web site, if any. Don't activate Windows 7 yet, make sure everything works first. You have 30 days to activate. You can only activate online once... (mine wouldn't accept the key on another system). If you have a Dell XPS m1530 laptop you might have a problem with bluetooth and the fingerprint reader (if any). Other than that ...

No trouble here, but mine is a clean install. I would start by checking for video driver updates. Hangs in a new Windows release are very often due to video driver compatibility issues. Next check for updates to any software that is filtering disk I/O (antivirus, antispyware, backup or other storage-related utilities). Also check for BIOS updates, and for error events in the System Event Log...

I have occasional stalls with Win7 / Firefox where I had to click the " reload" button, but I did under XP too. I attribute it to "the Internet", which is subject to occasional traffic glitches.

Greetings Bob, I can't offer any specific help to your direct question, but I have been able to use my Nikon 4000 scanner in the 64-bit version of Vista and now 64-bit Windows 7. I discovered this on the "Earthbound Light" website. I don't know if this link will come through, but if not, go to earthboundlight.com , go to Photo Tips and then Archive. Scroll down the one about making a Nikon ...

You are correct, there is a metal "plate" that covers the opening where the drive goes. Usually if you twist the plate, the tabs will break off and you'll have use of the opening. As long as you don't bend the chassis itself getting the plate off, you should be fine. Usually, they come off fairly easily.
