Set everything to manual, including Auto, set EV = 0, and use Spot metering. As an example, on the last photo, spot-meter on the top of the wood banister, then focus/compose and snap. Check the histogram. It will probably be over-exposed a bit, but I'm guesstimating. A more accurate guesstimate would be to spot on the pathway down below. That will probably result in a slight under-exposure, but a) it's correctable in PP, and b)...

Published (2008-11-29 07:24:47)
The f/3.5-f/5.6 refers to the maximum (widest) aperture available which is variable on your zoom depending on the focal length you choose, however minimum (smallest) aperture is a constant I assume around f/22 on your lens. The "faster" lenses have larger apertures (smaller numbers) going down to 1.4 or even larger, and as the number gets smaller (larger aperture) the price generally rises. Hope this helps. I do have and use the Cokin wide-angle holder that Rich mentioned and it hold one filter and works good, just watch to ensure it is straight or you will see it in the shot. Most of the time I just hold the filter/filters in front of the lens by hand and...

Fog, a Hill and a Building

A bit frustrated here. Have been trying to get some shots that I really want but can't get there due to schedule or obligations. Tried to get some shots yesteerday on my way into work for a few hours. I live in an area where a wide vareity of subjeects is avalable as evidenced by this selection. The first was inspired by some spectacular fog scenes I saw in Michigan this summer. We had some rain here yesterday and a little fog showed up...

Yesterday during Thanksgiving my D80 was passed around and several family members took pictures with it. I decided to let it go. Now today the onboard flash isn't working. If I set the camera in Auto and point at a subject that would require flash, the flash pops up and the white light operates but when I take the picture there is no flash. I cannot figure it out. I made sure the flash was ...

Hey Guys, I have a friend who is into photograpghy and wants to buy his first SLR. He is debating a new D60 or my used D50. Which do you guys think he should buy? As a friend which one should I point him too, the D50 or D60? I know the only real difference is the af motor and megapixel difference. But is there anything else? Also how much do you think the D50 is worth (w/o lenses)? ...

I've been asked to photograph chickens in a small yard. I am a city boy...these things won't stay still and they stand on the dirt ground around chicken coops so backgrounds aren't very interesting. I tried using my 17-35 but I didn't realize I wouldn't be able to get close. Next day, I tried my 24-70 and that gave me better reach but the backgrounds are boring. I've had soft, even light ...

I made this transition myself (almost), so I can lend some insight. I used a Panasonic Lumix TZ1 (the first version of your P&S) and I still have it. It's great for taking to the beach etc., and my wife sticks it in her purse for going out with friends etc. When I wanted to get more serious about the hobby I went to a bridge camera - a Panasonic Lumix FZ-18. This really didn't do it for...

I stopped on my way home just as the sun was setting and took a few photos of the sunset at a small local lake. It actually rained with a few thunderstorms last night, and was still raining this morning....a rarity in Southern California. Anyway, the sun peeked through and I caught a bit of the fading light. I haven't shot much, or posted images in recent days so I felt the need....:)...

Well, here we go again... I'm yet ANOTHER noob that has been suckered in to shooting a wedding... My daughter's best friend can NOT afford a photographer, so having her get a pro is out. Believe me, I tried. So I have a D40 and the Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 (non VR) kit lens, and a Nikkor 55-200mm f4-5.6 VR telezoom. Both are decent noob lenses for a great little noob DSLR. I'm debating ...
