Wired reviews the T1i / 500D

Hmmmm..... So what your saying is, the T1i is too good for cheap lenses (produces too much resoultion) so since you can't afford better lenses, you went back to a camera which produces less resolution, and now your taking better shots ? Uhhh, okay. Personally, I wish I could afford a 1Ds Mk III, or at least a 5D II, and a bunch of awesome L glass...... but what the hey, the T1i is by far the nicest camera I've ever owned. I'm...

Great!!! I guess the Windows 7 issues has gone away. I tried a 5 image bracket and had no trouble. But it appears you solved the problem. Now you are really hedged. Of something happens to one program you should be skilled at the other.

I've got a flash and a tripod. But what I am after is a second lens. I ask the question because I like to hear from those who are experienced. Seeing if they can share some insight with me. So I am interested in knowing what lens people could not live without besides the kit lens.

Much better than the kit, very sharp starting at f/2.8. This is the only good thing that I can say about that lens. Its AF is very erratic, contrast and colors are not great. There is often (but not always) something sharp in...

If not the 100-400L, then what ???
Published (2009-11-24 14:43:00)
Now that you've gotten all the fishes in one place, just wanted to say thanks for sparking an interesting debate on the long lens decision process. I was considering the Sigma 50-500 myself and this thread does nothing to discourage that since the juzaphoto comparison shows the IQ holds up very well against the venerable 100-400 and gives some extra reach without a TC. The lack of OS may not be as big a concern as I feared, based on...

damn.... everything I bought so far are Grey imports - except 50 f1.8. and I only live 5 minutes from them! but at the same time, everything I bought has been so much cheaper than stuff imported through official channels, i bought my 1000D for $780 6 month ago, when the NZ products were around 900 mark. the I wonder how much they would charge me to calibrate...

It has been typically said that for the price, the 50mm f/1.8 is probably the sharpest lens available. Therefore, I would think it would at least get very close. However, I should advise that lenses with very wide apertures can be much harder to use effectively than those will narrower apertures (obviously, you're naturally going to expect a learning curve).

Yeah, the autofocus isn't super fast or quiet. Everyone knows that. You don't buy a camera to have quiet autofocus in video mode. Watch this and re-evaluate your statement please: http://vimeo.com/5603639

I also own the combo T1i + 430 EX II. The only reason for using the internal flash is to be convinced why you need to get an external unit ASAP :-) No more red eyes, harsh lightning and bad flash photography.

I've got a 300D body that I got dirt cheap and keep as a second body (I use a 350D). Most shortcomings I can overcome in post-processing so there are only a couple things that you really need to think about with the 300D and newer bodies: no mirror lock, small/slow buffer, no FEC, and slow startup time; however, some of these shortcomings can be overcome by various hacks available online (I ...

Photomatix is the front runner because it is affordable, gives good results that most people like, has plenty of options, and is continually being developed. I always looking for someone to come up on them and provide a better product, but I haven't found one yet. I have no affiliation with Photomatix. :)

For most vacation snaps in good light a P&S is much easier to use. You can often just set the camera to "auto", aim (if you can see anything on the lcd in bright light) and shoot. But enter a church or museum or anywhere else where it is dark and most pictures may come out bad, or go to fast action like a race or other sports event and you miss the shots due to shutter lag. This is where a dslr ...

I have the 100-400 L and love it. The image quality is very good for such a wide zoom range, but yeah it'll never beat a prime and a lot of people don't seem to like the push-pull zoom (I actually like push-pull for big lenses, but YMMV). If I were buying again today I'd still look at the 100-400L but I'd probably also give the Sigma 150-500 a good looking over as well since I've heard good ...

I agree 99% of your impression except the 50mm f/1.8 II part. This lens is simply outstanding. People like to knock on this lens, but compare against Nikon 50mm f/1. 8(d), you get both autofocusing + for a cheap price of just $100. I don't get why people whine about a $100 lens not having good build qualty? It is a $100 lens, what do you expect? Carbon Fiber with Gold trim? Also, 50mm f/1....

I had all Olympus cameras but they weren't fast enough to capture what I wanted not even with the 50mm 2.0, so I soild all of my Olympus equipment and bought the XS. I love it and the 50mm 1.8. Truthfully, I haven't used the 18-55 very much which came with. All images were shot at 800 ISO. I think 1600 is a bit rough to clean up but still usable. On my Olympus cameras, I wouldn't even use ...

I did actually buy that combo last Sunday. Hmmm....apart from the 50mm f1.8u one that I got for free as a promotion, I would love to have any of the wide or ultra wides zooms. Not sure if they will come in the budget mentioned though !!

So, I'm just kind of walking the edge of the bay, and looking for what to shoot next, when I look up to see this guy flying with something in his beak... I think it was a little Sculpin or Rockfish. The idea is to shoot objects that ar lit by the " golden light", not just to take sunset shots. Here is an example. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3175/3018540744_966 80fb626.jpg
