HPX-300 or EX1R?
Published (2009-11-28 18:35:00)
I am sure you will dig the EX1R, it is a great camera. A producer friend of mine is shooting a green screen feature with that exact setup, EX1s with the NanoFlashes, he just asked me my opinion about doing so the other day. I wrote an article in this month's HD Video Pro Magazine about outboard recording devices, the NanoFlash is a pretty impressive little box. I reviewed the NanoFlash, the AG-HPG20 P2 recorder, the Ki-Pro, the Focus...

I have to agree with Noah. I would contact an attorney. Not all laws are set in stone. Hard drives today are at an all time low cost per gigabyte. Burning the data to Blu-Ray and backing up to LTO/DLT are also reasonable options. Steve Eisen Eisen Video Productions Board of Directors Chicago Final Cut Pro Users Group

One thing I do know is not to pose a question to an attorney client that I don't have the answer to. They look at us as their outside consultant/expert so I need to find out if any case law in IL is relevant to erasing the media the original event was shot on. I have a post into the LinkedIn Litigation Specialists group and the Yahoo Legal Video group so perhaps someone on the legal side can let us video folks know what's up. I do...

Sorry Cliff, the only way to get the camera in that mode is to hold down the button for 2 secs, this is true if you are hooking up the camera via USB or Firewire. Skimmed over your post because I know nothing about Vista. So just clarifying, that is not a fix but the actual procedure that is in the manual.

Yeah I doubt highly the law has bothered to catch up specifically with P2 cards but that's why I recommended discussing with the attorneys involved. In this case it's less about what the law specifically states than what the parties agree to accept- isn't it? If there's a doubt, yeah go with a tape. No reason to blow a gig over something where they probably are not caring what it's shot on so long as they follow the...

HVX - tape 16:9 or 4:3
Published (2009-12-01 19:27:00)
I have found the settings in the manual. Still not shure about: -The difference between 'Letterbox' and 'Squeeze'. Is Letterbox a true 16:9 or does it just but the black bands on the footage? - The small black line on top of the footage (recorded in 4:3) when viewed in Sony Vegas. Thank you. I want to learn...

Big mistake - Panasonic 30pN woes
Published (2009-11-26 02:54:00)
Nicholas, can you let me know what solution you ended up using. I am having the same issue...we had a 3 cam shoot and the cams were set to 720/30PN, but one of them was in "film" mode which I guess recorded it at 23.98. Like you said, the footage plays fast when loaded into FCP and I can't seem to find any setting to get it normal speed. Thanks! HPX-2000 w/AVC board P2 Mobile with AVC board MBP 10.5

Decent Audio Setup?
Published (2009-11-27 01:30:00)
I would be curious if anyone has used the Sennheiser ME66 as an external micropone on the HPX170. I have these two units, but as I understand it, the Sennheiser ME66 is a low impedance microphone while the XLR inputs on the HPX170 are high impedance. That makes me, a newbie, think the two are incompatible. Radio Shack and others sell impedance adapters, http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062443 but they all seem to connect...

Well it's a 1:1 digital clone so I'd make the argument that if you make a hard drive transfer with verification it's in fact more 'original' than any analog tape dub could be. Or you charge them the cost of the P2 card and give them that- but that's going to make your services cost-prohibitive I'm thinking. Best would be sign off from the attorneys involved. Once you import the footage into Avid, it gets turned into an Avid MXF file. The file name becomes and Avid name, and the audio/video affiliation is now controlled by the Avid software. This is why it is pretty important to keep the original P2 files backed up...those are your master tapes. But, not all is lost. MXF4Mac allows FCP to see those Avid MXF files. It will import audio and ...

Sure, you could although you would need an adapter to turn the unbalanced RCA line level signal into the correct impedance and output level to drive your headphones. Checking your headphone specs for their impedance level would be a starting point, then a trip to Radio Shack. Providing value added material to all of your favorite DVDs

Ok, I have seen many posts with this same problem but never a clear explanation to what has happened. This fix happens to be easy. Once you have the correct other funtions pointed to the USB output you must hold down the mcr button again for 2 seconds for the camera to connect and be recognized by the USB port. This little error costs me about 20 hours of frustration. At the...

I have not shot with the EX1R, but have shot a lot with the EX1/EX3 and the HPX300 (as a matter of fact, I am shooting a regional PSA Monday with a 300). Th 300 is undoubtedly a better camera from a handling and ergonomic standpoint. The EX1 and EX3 feel like a brick with a viewfinder and am unbalanced brick at that. The EX1 is antiseptically clean, too clean for my taste. The signal looks...

Right, so here's what I've decided to do, I'm hoping for the best... I'm going to re-L&T the HVX footage (essentially undercranked footage, 30p recorded at 24fps) with the "Remove Pulldown and Duplicate Frames" checkbox off. Then, toss the clips onto a 30p timeline in Final Cut, adjust the speed of the clips to correct the undercranked effect. Convert using Compressor to get as-true-as-I-...

Well, the EX1 and EX3 are sharper...no denying that. And the 170 is much better in low light, I shot in a night club with existing light and it did VERY well. HANDHELD? The EX series are ergonomic nightmares hand held. They kill the wrist. And holding it while trying to adjust focus...lordy. With that camera I want sticks.
