well you are going from HD to SD and the HD is highly compressed they will never look the same. I have posted tips on getting better quality many times, do a search try some stuff, post detailed info on settings and procedure and you can get specific info. How long is your movie, what preset did you use?

I have a 35mm film that was shot full frame, but framed for a 2:35 aspect ratio. The film was transferred to Sony HDCAM 1080p and was edited in Avid, where the 2:35 matte was applied. I'm making an SD DVD of the film and so far have encoded the material with the 2:35 matte on it, put it in an SD DVD project and set the display mode to 16:9 letterbox. As expected, there are large black bars on the top and bottom when the film is played on...

DVD Cropping Issue
Published (2009-11-26 14:08:00)
Thank you Jeff. I guess it is an overscan issue, but it doesn't cut off the image equally on all sides. Anyway, the footage and menus are all in 16:9. The question is, if every set does overscan, how do we see the 2.35:1 DVDs from Hollywood? Do they crop as well, just that we don't notice it? Thanks for you reply!

Is anybody out there using Sonics, DVDit Pro HD for burning HD discs? If so, what are your thoughts? I've been using DVDit Pro (SD) for many years and have been pretty happy. It's only a $200 upgrade for me and seems to be the most cost effective jump into Blu-Ray authoring. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mark

I noticed there are other forums on here that deal with similiar issues, but I would like to know WHY professional movies work on virtually ALL DVD-players, and if I could personally get this type of disc and/or burner. When I put a professional DVD (meaning Titanic, or the Comebacks, etc.) in my PS3, it reads it as a DVD-RAM disc, does this mean I should purphase DVD-RAM discs? For jobs in the past, I have used various DVD-R disc types, such...

DVD Cropping Issue
Published (2009-11-25 13:40:00)
This sounds very much like the Overscan area is cut off. This is normal. The editing software, and computer playback of DVD, may show the entire frame, but television sets always cut some of the edges off, this is completely normal. If TVs showed every pixel, then many might show beyond the edge of the image, so there is some overlap of the bezel around the screen to keep this from happening. In the titler of your NLE, you may have noticed a...

for stuff like this a quick look at the manual would give you the fastest answer. You set the region in the disc inspector, Region/Copywrite tab. By default all the regions are selected (which some people incorrectly refer to as "0" but it is ALL Regions). So if you have not changed these setting you are okay to tell them Region 1.

16:9 vs 2.35 vs 4:3 - answer is YES, you MUST have LARGE black bars on 4:3 TVs on 16:9 TVs you have small black bars :) Please check your encode settings and track settings - you must set "16:9 MPEG2" in source/target and to 16:9 Letterbox in DVDSP what is 23.976-> 29.97? Ohh... DVD can't be progressive, and YES in 23.976 footage will be added fields for 29.97 interlaced video, it's...

You need to do a few things 1) Get a bitrate calculator so you know what the highest bitrate you can encode your assets. Remember there are two ceilings, what will fit on the disc as well as a bitrate limited, which for video is normal 7-7.5. 2) Use Compressor or other encoding software to encode to m2v before going to DVDSP. 3) Search this forum and the DVDSP forum for specific ...

All retail titles are replicated, stamped copies and that is one major step, orders pretty much start at about 1000 copies and run under $1k with complete packaging. Video bitrate should always be under 7.5Mbps (7Mbps max if you use VBR) and the audio should be encoded as ac3. DVD-R should be used, top quality disc only, I use Maxell plus but others have great success with other brands....
