No......I grade broadcast shows on Color all the time...... But I guess you would need to be doing projects on a good professional budget to justify the presumed expense of the software.....someone working in their garage on low budget industrial videos or cheapie ads, $50,000 features etc would probably not really be in the market for such a system... That's all I meant.... PW

"It will be a Colour Grading setup only, editing is a low priority." You think that now -- but there are so many issues with the round trip that you will need to become VERY technically conversant with FCP so that you can "fix" the timelines that you will be getting, without altering them. There is ALWAYS a reason that the round trip will fail, and it is USUALLY for some good reason, but it will still require excellent,...

Cutting up a Master from Tape
Published (2009-11-25 01:27:00)
Digitize the show off the tape, import the EDL into FCP, place the QT of the tape onto a separate track in the timeline created by the EDL and use the EDL as a guide to notch the movie. Then delete the EDL layer(s) and the empty tracks, send to Color. Grade, send back to FCP. Add headers if necessary and lay off to tape. Just FYI, we are testing 9.21 as we speak and that firmware fixes the audio problem. Should be released in the next couple of days. Also, in our testing we have found that it only happens with about 10% of SDI sources, mostly in SD-SDI and much less frequently in HD-SDI. Anyway, we recognize that this bug slipped in at some point and will get this resolved for you shortly. Thank you for your patience. Bram Desmet FSI (Flanders Scientific,...

Thanks Uli I am doing some tests now, I never checked the de-interlace on render-out in Color, strange thing is that now I get some footage well rendered and some flattened even if it's from the same camera, same capture and same Media manager batch out. Enrico www.indydoc.it

Color confusion
Published (2009-11-18 09:58:00)
Hi folks, Still not clear on what I'm seeing where, why and how to understand it. This first still is what I see in FCP when ingesting a Red clip via the native-wrapped method and this is what I base my decision to color correct This second still is what I see once I have sent to Color the first still - not the first shift in color between the two ie more neutral/colder And finally the third still is the same as the second but with color...

Just to add that I've trashed the Color preferences and no difference. One thing I did notice is that if I create a new project, it will be ok where the file name will show StillStore...etc but after I click Save twice, it will revert to ... in the filename.
Prior to reinstalling this Mac, it was running OSX 10.5.5 and it was ok but a clean install and update to OSX 10.5.8, this problem ...

It's another tool for folks to use. Remember Final Touch 2K, now Color used to have a $25,000 price tag. That's what amuses me about people who whine that it's only a $1,000 software vs. the "big boys."
People will use what they want to use. If Smoke is coming to the Mac that tells you that Apple's market share has increased enough to make it profitable to port the software over.

ROCK > HARD PLACE.
= Your position, as I understand it.
Cutting it up on a captured timeline in FCP looks like the hard way, but it enables the round trip, and gives YOU control. I would NOT program the dissolves, but razor the cuts and do the dissolves as keyframes in COLOR. You're going to have to do it that way anyway on the COLOR timeline... if you program the dissolves as cut ...

2K support is available with the K3 and might be the dealbreaker for all the rest.
For my money, the Kona3 plus breakout has been one of the best investments I have made -- I have two of them now, and the card definitely appears to have the legs to be best in show for some time.

You use three monitors with a dual-DVI GPU and an SDI I/O device (PCIeKona3 is what I use).
Main User Interface goes out of DVI-1. Preview/Scopes go out DVI-2. The main color grade SDI goes out the PCIe SDI line.
That is all.

If you don't have the time to experiment, try the Color FX plugin extras at Apple's site (http://support.apple.com/downloads/Color_Looks). They're free, and there's over 90 of them. If that doesn't work, try Graeme Nattress's plugins (http://www.nattress.com/Products/FinalTouch/). They're pretty inexpensive and do wonders.
By the time you look through these, you probably could have created...

Easiest thing to do: open project with grades you want to save. Scroll to the shots you want to save. in your GRADES bin make a NEW folder somewhere (user/library/application support/color/favorites.... etc...) and save the grade there. Repeat for all other projects you want to steal grades from. Then you can easily navigate to that Favorite Grades folder in Color for new projects....

Neither. I'd go with the new 12 series plasmas and a good engineer with a probe. The 12 series are allot better than the 1 series in a number of areas.

I think you should go either all Avid or all FCP. There can shifts in gamma and pedestal when you go back & forth between Avid codecs to FCP codecs. Staying on one platform eliminates this headache.
If you really do need or want to work cross platform, then it's best to use one for offline and then redigitize (recapture) on the other for online. That also eliminates the problems with ...

"... if a FinalTouch user could try to find the manual"
ROFLMAO.
There was no Final Touch manual. They published a pamphlet that covered a brief description of the Rooms.
When the COLOR manual was released it was a revelation to us all.

Enrico, I don't mean to offend you, but either you really need to learn some fundamentals about how video works, or you really need to take this to someone who can do this for you the correct way.
By transcoding from DV to Prores with the media mangager, you've created an additional, needless round of compression. If your settings are wrong, you will have trashed your video by doing this....

You got it. No transparecy. But its not really accurate to say "cancels".
COLOR isn't an editing application.

[Soeren Schlotfeldt] "But for the future (I will change from Color to a better Software like Speedgrade) I see some problems with the cooper. I talked to guys at Assimilate, Iridas and DVS and all of them won't support the Eclipse any longer. But the Cp-200 will be supported and for Color it will get the same mapping software like the Wave."
I think you answered your own question right ...
