3-way color corrector for photoshop
Published (2009-12-14 23:44:00)
Sorry I wasn't clear, yes, I was using levels instead of curves, and also realized that all the main cc tools could be done through adjustment layers using the "mask" function for tonal range. I don't mind having multiple layers, as long as it doesn't degrade the image or anything. That makes it clear (to a non-tweaker), that we're "increasing overall contrast here", "increasing mid-tone blue gamma...

The biggest hurdle to learning any application that is different from another is accepting the differences. Oftentimes you'll find Avid editors frustrated when using FCP and of course the inverse is also true. The frustration stems from the user wanting the NLE to work in a way that's familiar. Once the editors get past the fact that the NLE's are different the learning process becomes much less of a battle. Send Adobe a...

Non destructive Mask leveling
Published (2009-12-20 15:19:00)
If you want to do non destructive adjustments, do NOT use the image adjustment options. Instead, use Layer -> New Adjustment Layer. You can also add adjustment layers if the Layers window is visible. It has a circle icon that is half white and half black. Click on that icon to see a list of adjustment layers, and click on the one you want. Adjustment layers are non destructive, and they have masks.

It really depends on the device that your going to output to that determines the DPI. 600 in any case is over kill. 16 bit is also over kill for mostly text. 8 bit is usually always good enough unless at this size you have huge continous tones or are outputting to say 200 lpi (lines per inch) Which you are probably not doing. Any CMYK printed piece doesn't need to be more than 300dpi especially since most is text as you say. No you...

Non destructive Mask leveling
Published (2009-12-20 15:39:00)
I need those adjustment layers applied to my mask, not to the image. A mask applied to an adjustment layer would only determine the affected areas of the adjustment layer, rather than affect the mask itself.

Pen tool leaves a small gap?
Published (2009-12-12 01:13:00)
Hello everyone, I'm using the pen tool to separate an object into two layers so I can animate them individually in After Effects. When I use the pen tool then select "New Layer via Cut" there is a very small white gap between the two layers. What am I doing wrong? Thank you in advance. Craig

Large Poster Settings

I have a project where I need to make a large poster. I'm not sure what the final print size, but imagine a movie poster around 24x36. When I go into PS to create a new document, I entered the dimensions of 24x36 at 600ppi, CMYK at 16 bit....and the file size is 2 gigs. That seems like an unmanageable file size so I am curious of what I should do. Should I do 600dpi and 16 bit for safety, what about size, can I stat smaller and then...

You can actually do this VERY quickly in Adobe After Effects using the clone stamp. It has been awhile since I did this, but worked great over a series of frames, even if the dust moves over time.

" I have RGB gain and gamma control in the midtone, highlight and shadow ranges" - Steve T.
Use the levels tool or curves tool to individually adjust the highlights, midtones and shadows of each individual channel. Use the histogram tool to view the levels of each channel as you make the adjustments.

When you add an adjustment layer like CURVES, it will affect all layers below. But when you press on a PC Alt + plus the symbol for new adjustment layer (or press LAYER-NEW ADJUSTMENT LAYER from the menu) you will get a popup menu. Select in this popup menu the option USE PREVIOUS LAYER TO CREATE CLIPPING MASK, the adjustment layer will only work for the layer directly below.

You might try the Shadow/Highlight image adjustment filter, then use the Dodge tool with a soft feathered brush and very low flow setting to further soften the shadows as necessary. I hope this helps.
