do not buy a TBC (and certainly do not buy a Sony BVT-2000 which will not work with a Sony VO-9800). Go to a catalog company like http://www.markertek.com, and purchase a FRAME SYNCHRONIZER, like a DataVideo TBC-1000, or similar product. This will lock up your horrible 3/4" VTR, so you don't get color shifts. You will find that many pieces of old equipment (like old TBC's from Microtime, For-A, Fortel, Prime Image) are old and...

Kona 3 K-Box out of sync with FCP
Published (2009-12-01 18:10:00)
Thanks Gary. I wonder why I have never had this problem before - would/could it just be the use of the Kona that creates the problem? Does it have something to do with the fact that my monitor is in sync (well now it is) and FCP on my computer screens is out of sync? Interesting.....!

Kona 3 K-Box out of sync with FCP
Published (2009-12-01 19:22:00)
Like Gary says, it was originally designed for firewire latency. You could then adjust it so your external monitor and FCP canvas were in sync. With the Kona cards depending if you're doing any conversion, there's virtually no latency. Sometimes, it can be off by a frame if you are down or up-converting, and some flat panel monitors will add even more latency. Jeremy

Best reference book for serious HD?
Published (2009-11-25 15:37:00)
This is a little tongue in cheek but it tends to be true: When not at work you tend to read and have the book, at work the manual. So wait, if you need a manual try going to a Hamfest and see if you can find one or one that`s similar. The same result for visiting TV stations. What I hate is when the manual is in the Library, the broken or unlearned equipment is on location, and the electricity and lighting crew doesn`t feel like going to...

Words of wisdom, Bob. That's basically how I developed my expertise in audio systems, so it's no big change, then. I've been reading manual after manual and setting up some video equipment obstacle courses for myself and learning plenty. The VTR manual has been assimilated, the Kona's is next and my girlfriend is starting to think I'm way too enthusiastic about this stuff. Thanks to all for the suggestions, I now have...

3/4" VTR's don't have built in TBC's. I've got a BVT-2000 sitting around which is the matching TBC with 16 lines of memory. uses the multipin connector, 500W.... shipping shouldn't be too bad on 80lbs or so :) try ebay for a used TBC Steve Oakley DP • Editor • VFX Artist www.practicali.com

[Simon Green] "I have been going up the wall thinking it was the Kona box! Out of curiosity, why is this there and why is it defaulted to 4 frames offset? " I believe that was a default set by the app in the early FW days and has stayed unchanged in the underlying code within FCP since. Its been at 4 frames since something like FCP 1.2 or so? gary adcock Studio37 HD & Film Consultation Post and Production Workflows for the...

Sounds like you need a time base corrector to clean that signal up a bit.

[jason macdonald] "My mac monitor is fine. It's the monitor that I'm viewing that goes darker, so it's something to do with the Kona 3 I'm guessing? "
Your problem is your workflow, not your Kona card.
That apple computer monitor has a gamma of 1.8- while professional video has a gamma of 2.2- so yes it will look darker on a real video monitor.

Absolutely. That's one of the things that the Kona 3 does well. It will down convert 1080 or 720 to letterbox SD, and it will cross convert anamorphic SD to letterbox.
The caveat is that it has to come into the Kona over SDI.

Read your NLE manual.
Then read all the manuals for all of your video gear.
That should keep you busy ;)

yup,
you got a genlock problem. Take my advice here, as I know exactly what you are going thru.
A normal configuration, even with HD decks and the Kona is to GENLOCK both the Reference Input of the Kona, AND the Ref Videoinput of your HD VTR. You better have a black gen, like an AJA GEN10. There are variations of this, as I will describe below.

[ayman abdel-basset] "i think the problem is the connection of the raid..
what is the best solution for the uncompressed HD (8bit,10bit) storage? "
Firewire is NOT fast enough storage for Uncompressed HD.
Uncompressed 1080 is over 165 megabytes a second, FW maxes out between 25/35 megabytes per second.
To handle uncompressed HD you need multiple drives attached via Sata, SAS,...
