I hadn't seen 2001 since I was a teenager. I didn't think I had understood it back then. Maybe I underestimated myself a bit? I mean, it is fairly lineal and yes, the last act gets a bit too ethereal and doesn't adhere strictly to real world logic but it isn't that abstract? It's even linked and continues the progression of the rest of the film. I'm baffled that this film is considered like, "the most...

Quote: I think forizzer overstates the importance of Micah's racial position on their budding relationship, although he (Micah) does pose an interesting theory, at least on the surface: why does indie seem to be a primarily white thing? That's the point though - it doesn't have to be. Just like the rap scene doesn't particularly have to be a white thing. Yeah, I'll admit that seeing a black person in an indie group is...

I need to make myself see A Serious Man , ugh. It just doesn't appeal to me? Anyway expanded thoughts on the de Havilliciousness of To Each His Own and Hold Back the Dawn .

A friend and I went to see An Education and sort of picked up this elderly French woman in line and she was raving A Serious Man to the high heavens. I have heard nothing but good things about it. Yet, I still don't want to see it.

" Whatever works, do that," Boris says looking at his audience.
So I figure that's what Woody Allen decided to do, too.
And that's how we got Whatever Works.
A film that is all too familiar when looking at it as a Woody Allen movie.
We have the neurotic curmudgeon spouting out his beliefs and opinions at an offensive volume... the borderline sexist depiction of women... etc, etc. ...

The Godfather Part II *****/*****
Just as strong and gripping as everybody had told me. Enthralled by the unravelling of Kay and Michael's relationship. Can't believe I put this one off for so long.
Norma Rae ***.5/*****
Brought to mind the more recent Erin Brokovich. Similarly touching coverage of both the work life and personal life of a working class woman. Sally Field was magnificent...

Thanks for the great review movielocke! I really want to see this after reading it. The NY Times and EW reviews also caused me to want to see A Christmas Carol. A week ago I had no desire to.

This movie has so many things to admire, but so less to enjoy. Almodovar fell in love wth a story without interest because he tries to complicates and tell with a big drama tome what is a simple story. And some scenes are just simply unbelievable. What is disappointing is that some of the actors in the movie are wrong like Blanca Portillo who is so overacted. I really wanted to love it but this ...

Oh, and I will echo (500) Days of Summer, because it will be every emo, first-year drama college student's favorite romantic comedy, because they're allowed to like it because it's so "indie".
Which isn't to say I dislike the film, but that's why it will have good legs on DVD.

I'm sad to say this but...what a disappointment.
Totally kidding. Loved it, to no shock or awe.
Mulligan was truly sensational in her role. What I really loved was how she could deftly move from a portrayal of just your average teenager whom I could truly relate to, to a powerhouse diva capable of delivering you a fiery monologue for the record books. Brava!
Molina is a close ...

The final act really jilted me. I was appreciating it's campy style until it did the whole 180 and jumped all over the place. Seriously [ Spoiler: ] what was the point of the entire library scene? That's like 10 minutes of uselessness apart from him choosing a glimpse of heaven
And I hated Diaz's performance. I think she took that performance way over the top. Subtlety would prevailed here...
