I've yet to read the book, but there was something incredibly captivating about the film that I can't really put my finger on. The haunting apocalyptic world captured by Aguirresarobe could be one thing. The deterioration of Mortensen was another. Cave/Ellis' score was a breath of pure optimism. Even Smit-McPhee was great (not Waltz great - yes, I will use him as my actor barometer for the next few weeks/years) in his debut and...

So...Unforgiven. I didn't expect it to be as complex and affecting as it was, but I really shouldn't have doubted teh Clint. Yes, I was expecting an exploration on the ripple effects of violence but what I didn't expect was this truly incisive and morally nuanced rumination on the true nature between retribution and retaliation; the lines between justice and vengeance are blurred in such a direct way that the viewer's own...

Jesus, doesn't anyone hunt down Cary Grant films? Why must we constantly get reviews of films staring Sir Stiff?

Hey party pooper, I just watched Bringing Up Baby twice last week, back to back and made note here of Sir Cary's Harold Lloyd-ish brilliance. His chemistry with Hepburn cannot be topped by ANY of her acting partners and his Johnny Case in Holiday is in my performance pantheon. And I...

Tarty title, but I love it. Random film thought: I am taking my family to see Antichrist over the holiday.

I don't even know why I bother watching movies this year. Because Moodysson's version of Inarittu's Babel is like insufferable. It takes exactly 1 hour and 20 minutes before something remotely dramatic happens. Up until then, we've seen pretty people walking around, carrying the burden of globalization on their young shoulders. Michelle Williams is moping as a surgeon, Gael Garcia Bernal is moping as the cyber millionaire...

Speaking of Cary Grant, I recently watched it for film class. A wonderful classic that absolutely lives up to the hype. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russel are fantastic, giving some of the best work I have ever seen on screen. Its such a wonder to watch these two snap out dialogue at each other with fierce wit. I could watch this again and again. Great week for film viewing for me so far!

I don't care. I've been to school. Most people here have, too. We don't need to sit and watch a movie that is REALISTIC SCHOOL DAY.
If you do, like, take up an evening class... by all means get your realistic school day rocks off... but I'm going to see the Mayans blow the world up and da' CGI Boy wolves.

It should have been directed by Kelly Reichardt, in my opinion. They shouldn't have felt the need to flesh out so much of the story in the first place; that trailer was garbage. What about Theron? Instantly forgettable? Nice review, by the way.

Mammoth was such a dissapointment. Or was it? Lukas Moodysson's last films have been dreadful ! He needs to get back to his old brilliant self but it just doesnt seem to happen any time soon. He's in a " cloud of darkness" or whatever shit he said.
Ill always love him due to Fucking Åmål but he's testing my love, that's for sure.
I agree with everything you said. Nice review ...

Richard Widmark to spank me? Heavens no! I would save that honor for the deliciously cheeky Miriam Hopkins circa 1932.
Hopkins is divine in Ernst Lubitsch's elegant and urbane pre-code screwball comedy Trouble In Paradise . Well, the whole thing is divine. Pickpockets, embezzlers, Parisian socialites, counts and countesses all mingle merrily in this delightful and keenly observed comedy ...

One of my favorite Almodovars is Law of Desire. Not as well known as his others but I love it. I also like Matador which is definitely one of his stranger films. I haven't see Live Flesh I a while. I need to watch that again.

I'm sad to say this but...what a disappointment.
Totally kidding. Loved it, to no shock or awe.
Mulligan was truly sensational in her role. What I really loved was how she could deftly move from a portrayal of just your average teenager whom I could truly relate to, to a powerhouse diva capable of delivering you a fiery monologue for the record books. Brava!
Molina is a close ...
