Any signal processing -- whether analogue or digital is obviously going to affect the sound quality in some way -- be it obvious or very subtle. Some argue strongly that tracking and/or mixing in the analogue domain through a particular kind of sound desk does things to the sound that they like. Some also prefer to build a mix in the traditional way using an analogue console, and some prefer working on SSL desks rather than Neves, or APIs, or...

Pro Tools started out as a tape machine, Cubase and Logic started out as midi notation type software, while they are all perfectly capable DAWs for the majority of tasks these days those inherent workflows are usually key to some very experienced users speed of use. For example if your doing lots of major band tracking work interchangably between studios Pro Tools is still kinda the be all end all solution. That doesn't mean you...

Highly simplified answer Any help? J YES! - Very understandable and as much information as I need at the moment. Thanks much. The desktop products are 'genuine' ssl circuits and their price reflects that. But the reason that mix engineers choose ssl desks is not just because they like what the channel strips do to the sound. In fact some engineers don't, depending on the source. What happens with those desks is that the whole desk has a charachter that develops more obviously as you hit the mix busses harder. It starts to behave like a big compressor....

Quote MarkOne: Yes, the Kurzweil is very nice, I'm sure, except I have sound sources aplenty but what I really need is a really nice MIDI controller. I tried the Novation SL49 and really have to say the keybed was fairly naff... I assume the 61 key will be the same - and they don't have a 76 key option anyway. The Akai MPK61 had a really nice feeling keybed, I could enjoy that one but again they don't have a 76 - And their 88...

I've got one straight away.... Just the other day an admittedly inexperienced band asked if I was 'just going to DI the vocal'?. Thought that was pretty amusing. I showed them a jack plug and asked them where they'd like me to stick it!

You have just put into words exactly what has annoyed the living hell out of me for years.
Does my head in. Obviously, its to attract ones attention and make you want to
buy the product being advertised. At one time, i even thought about buying a compressor to
try to keep the levels (at least a little) consistant. As you quite rightly
say.........GRRRRR!

Korg Trinity, Korg Triton, Korg Triton Studio, Korg Triton Extreme, Roland Fantom X,
Roland Fantom G, Yamaha Motif EX/ES, Korg M3. Personally, I have owned a Korg
Triton, Korg Triton Studio and Roland Fantom X. I found the Fantom X to be the easiest to
use. The X6 can be picked up for around £500 s/h if you shop around. If you can afford
the extra cash, i'd have a good look at the ...

I'm afraid that Pro Tools LE software does not recognize third party interfaces so the

Ok, I'll go first then. It's a very small 3x3m room but the bass traps helped a lot.

Many an engineer would have a raised eyebrow when considering the merits of the Voicetone
Correct in the studio. For studio work most engineers would not record with
compression - well maybe a little - and apply compression, if required, later at the mix
stage. Thus, the auto comp function might be seen as not necessary. Equally the auto eq
and de-esser might be frowned upon for tracking...

Have you checked you have proper termination on the ADA w/c input? The ADA doesn't provide
internal termination. I'm puzzled by your description of the DDX experiment.
What were you using as clock master? You should be able to use the ADAT outs on
the mackie (master) to sync the ADA's although it does mean two more lightpipe cables (one
to each ADA). In that case you'll need to set the...

If you can hold on just a little longer I have a feeling there will be some bargains to be
had. Rumours of a soon-to-be-seen replacement for HD as we know it are rife.

Obvious one here, Melodyne. The old version - DNA is amazing but to my mind not the leap
that the first version was. Must be used for good not evil, of course.

I'm presuming that they're trying to push their new site which sells " studio master"
digital versions of albums.

I've never found that to be a problem as I have always used a master power switch for my
system. At the start of the session I switch on the master power (which is on the UPS) and
boot the computers. At the end, I shut down the computers then switch off the master
power. It works for me.

If you pan a signal hard to one side, then when listening in mono it will drop in level by
6dB relative to anything going on at the centre of the image. That's just a
simple fact of mono summation life -- and the specific reason why it is important to check
your balances in mono. Stereo mixes and their derived mono versions will always sound
different. What you need to do is find the ...

Im a confirmed fan of the U87. That mic never lets me down. For vocals its a rare voice
that doesnt sound at least good through it, and some sound phenomenal. Its pattern switch
also makes it very versatile in a situation where you need minimum mics with maximum
capability. It will earn its keep, Im sure. The only ribbons Ive had in the
past were nothing special to me and ...
