Published (2009-12-11 20:22:00)
What have you guys been doing when your fuel selector valve messes up? I've got mine bypassed right now, with a couple of fuel filters being used to connect the lines to bypass the valve. I'm only running on the rear tank now. Mine is an 88 btw. I had just left work this afternoon when it started giving me problems. I have only been running the rear tank, because the front one had some old gas in it when I bought the truck. I found...

In dash brake light... is the E brake engaged? You have two fuel pumps, a low pressure one in the tank and a high pressure one on the driver's side frame rail. When you turn the key to on, you should hear both of them prime for a second or two. You should have approx 35 psi fuel pressure at the fuel rail. THere is a shraeder valve (like a tire valve) to hook the pressure guage up to. Make...

If you are going through that many sensors you must have other issues. You may have too much end play in the crankshaft and it is hitting the sensor. That was an issue with the early ones. If you put a thin shim/washer under the sensor that might help. The other option is that the code for that sensor, P0340, can also be caused by a bad wire.

You might want to rule out a vacuum leak. How to Use and Interpret a Vacuum Gauge Tips for Checking for vacuum leaks. Some of the sensors and some of the actuators either read the amount of vacuum, or use vacuum to move controls, therefore it is important to the proper functioning of the engine that your vacuum system is fully intact. Otherwise one may get codes falsely indicating ...

I found it. It takes a special tool to actually pull the pulley off the shaft. The tool needed can be purchased - Powerbuilt Kit20 or Cardone PT20-2006 or loaned out from a car parts store. The process of replacing a power steering pump is more involved then it appears --- your parts store can help.

4.9 liters = 299 cu in (1 liter = 61 cubic inches) Inline six cylinder, that thinks it's V8 ...and yes it's good motor, plenty of reliable power....depending on how many miles on it of course. Never heard of a 4.9 V8...unless it's something new There is a 4.6 L V8....

fuel pump!!!!!!!!!! also see if the exhaust is restricted, I can not remember if the 79 has a cat.convertor see if its plugged or the muffler. Also check your timing and see if the timing chain has alot off play(take the dist cap off and move the crank by hand and see how much it will move before the rotor moves back and forth, You do not want alot of play.

When the OD light flashes there is a code for the trans. The scanner MUST be able to read diesels and trannies...most are not. The hard shifts you feel is the trans protecting itself from further damage. If you drive it that way long enough the trans may not shift past 2nd gear....further protecting itself. I suspect it was overheating "while travelling up a steep hill." The RABS/VSS ...

Good luck on that one.. Those were JUNK when they were new. If ya can find one it will cost 300.00 plus and in a few years it will be leaking again. I found a guy on fordifaction.com that told how to revamp and put 79 power steering on those high boys. I never did try it but it sounded workable . Had to do a little drilling. Sorry I cant be more specific but find the site and type in ford power ...
