Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the transmissions & transfer cases section. It sounds like it's the module from your description.

Well, got the kit today, and installed what was there. PERFECT fit. The shifter is so tight now, no slop. However, the shift lever I bought is busted apparently the little pin on the inside that holds it to the inner shifter busted off, sooo back to the drawing board for a replacement shift lever.

Got it all hooked up and appears no issues. Goes into reverse without a problem. Dare I say, without jinxing myself, shifts and does everything like it is supposed almost like it did when I first got it back in 2005!!!!! Cheers Kinley

Whine during coast
Published (2009-11-29 17:48:00)
Here's the whole story... http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/...78#post2336078 I own a 1998 Explorer with about 170,000 miles on it. My problems began with a high speed whine. The noise occurred when above 40 mph and your foot was removed from the accelerator. Stegall's Transmission Shop in Greenville, SC rebuilt the transfer case. They did a great job and answered tons of questions about it and my other 4WD. The problem was a bad...

Give "hillbilly" check (see above post) when you can. Also, I take it the noise persisted with the front driveshaft out. If so, you have completly ruled out the TC. I had a dull clunk a long time ago that only happened when I drove over several small bumps, like broken pavement. I had just installed new shocks too but it turned out to be a bad lower ball joint. They didn't look bad but when I replaced them it went away....

You have it under control, that's the key. Don't let it go, they may or may not have a good reason for the delay.

Kwinters2 - Great news. I guess I will drop my pan again and install the D-rings. Getting really cold around here so I will tackle this in a few months. I have noticed that since I installed the new VB it actually shifts better through the gears.

This little "project" of mine, took a bit longer than planned. All in all, I spent around 7hrs, but I still have to bolt the t-case back up to the transmission. I also removed a bearing I shouldn't have; the smallest needle bearing. I knew I shouldn't have tried, but did anyway. That took a long time, as no proper tools for the job, so I "improvised." I used various sizes of bearing/...

I got to mine from under the hood, with a swivel ratchet pointed back forward. The hood was off, this might make a difference. You might try a gear wrench also.

For future reference. Finally got it figured out. Afte I put in a new slave, bled it everyway possible and evern swapped out the master cylinder with the one in the Ranger is all did the same thing. Wouldnt release until it idled down. So I narrowed it down to the clutch or pressure plate. Got a new clutch and pressure plate today and they did the trick. There is not visually wrong...

Kwinters - I was hoping you would have received a reply. I had the same issue as you. I replaced the VB and decided to tackle the low reverse servo as well. I had trouble putting the large D-ring on without twisting but I did get the smaller D-ring on the servo. I also put a new large O-ring on the servo. When I pushed it back into the bore it was extremely tight. I wondered like you if the ...

I believe that you have the 4R55E transmission on your 1996 V6 which is electronic shift controlled by the PCM. There is no modulator to find. The modulator was used on the A4LD transmission (1991 thru 1994).

IN '06 they started to come with 6 speeds, but i'm not sure if that was only on the v8 or with the v6. If it is the 5speed then it would be a 5r55w/s (s is with AWD). My guess is you have the 5r55w. Valve Body could also be it, but another common problem is the servo bores. The first can be done on the truck, the second problems it has be pulled and tore down to fix it. . .the servo bores ...

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the transmission section. How many miles does it have? These transmissions have known issues with the solenoid block acting up around 60K miles. You could purchase a solenoid block from WWW.800700Tran.Com . Check the internal wiring harness, and the bulkhead connector. The harness could have a bad connection. The servo bores have been known to ...
