Maybe the oil pump going out or something blocking some of the oil passages. If it's making bad noises it's almost certain it's not getting the lubrication it should be getting. If you happen to have an oil pressure gauge laying around you could hook it up to the car to see what kind of oil pressure readings you get at idle and at highway speeds.

[quote = Tuneman1984; 1327089] I posted earlier just thinking the light was coming on erroneously; now I think I've really got a problem. I apologize for the lengthy post, but here goes: Earlier this evening I was heading up the highway, cruising in 5th gear at a steady 55 MPH. Then I noticed the oil light begin to flicker intermittently, before coming on and staying on. The engine immediately started to sound really rough, almost like...

Today I went to take it for MOT and when it gets hot it starts missing and running on 3 cylinders. after a mile or so this gets unbearable and more cylinders start to miss and it "bogs down" Any ideas would be appreciated. I have done Plugs and leads and air filter could it be a lifter sticking or a...

The timing belt replacement would only affect engine vacuum if the belt was off a tooth and upset valve timing (it would also through off the ignition timing), or you caused a vacuum link during the installation. If the engine runs fine, fuel economy has not changed, and the check engine light has not come on, I wouldn't worry about it. Kind of curious why you checked vacuum...

Yes, the 1.8L is an interference motor, and do the timing belt ASAP. My parents bought a 96 with the 1.9L and 60k miles, it broke before it got to 62k. We got very lucky, we haven't pulled the head apart to check if the valves got banged up at all, but the car seems to be running fine. I never found out for certain if the 1.9L is or isn't an interference motor, but all signs point to it being ...

Has the oil been chabged lately? I'm sure it's full of oil? If someone had it that hasn't changed the oil often, the screen in the pan could be mostly plugged and not enough oil can get through. If all that is not the case, get a mechanical gauge to hook up to where the sending unit is to see what the pressure is. It could just be a bad sensor. If the headlight are flickering rythemicaly, ...

I have the same car, and that is normal with an escort, mine is a little more advanced though, and yours wil probably get worse to the point of dying at nearly every stop light, putting it in nuetral when coming to a stop helps, and once it gets really bad you may have to put it in neutral and keep your foot lightly on the gas while holding the brake just to keep it around 1000 rpms. I was just ...
