Car or no car/backpack or luggage?

We use the weekender convertible bags from ebags.com . Got the recommendation on this board - lots of us have them and love them. We usually hire a private driver, but Interbus is a good option to; check to see if they go where you want to.

It is not inaccurate that I am middle aged and chubby and only guys over 80 would hit on me. That is what I meant by lighten up.

Thanks Jeff~ I'll have to get off my lazy... lounge chair next trip and get over to San Jose del Cabo and check it out! It's just I was truly surprised by how 'mexican' the downtown area was away from the main tourist drag of Marina/Medano. I'm used to PV where things are more mixed together. andrews~ That's a good choice. Do know that Mismaloya is a ways to the south of downtown, so you'll need to use bus...

No Not all but many are open. My personal choice is Chez Elana one of PV's oldest restaurants & located in the second oldest hotel Los Cuatro Vientos. Gloria serves both her regular menu as well as a Traditional Turkey, dressing Cranberries, mash potatoes, Salad & pumpkin pie! Absolutely delicious!

Giving the gift of EDUCATION

Really interesting - thanks for sharing! It's surprising how much it takes (much less than many North Americans spend on coffee in a month!) to provide a change for a student to become educated and leave the cycle of marginalized living they've known. Have a wonderful trip and be sure to post a travelogue for us. And tell your daughter thanks for doing what she does!!

Okay, so on to Bosque del Cabo..... Cindy C was nice enough to run me over from El Remanso, where I was greeted by the other Cindy (who is expecting in June, along with other people ) I ended up in Lapa, my original cabina from years ago, and my how it's changed! All new everything, inside and out, including a huge deck. The deck mind you is sans railings, as are all others, which I prefer and hope they don't put them up! All new...

For CA travel in general my best advice is PACK LIGHT - just a loosely-filled carry-on each. I prefer a lightweight conversion pack (straps tuck away if I want to check it on my way home) but as long as it's small and light it's great - whether it's a wheely or a standard suitcase or a backpack is a matter of personal taste. Check out www.onebag.com Have a great trip!

No, it it isn't practical to do day trips between Monteverde and Arenal - it' a long bumpy road to get there, about 4 hours. Definitely need to just stay put once you get there.
In Tortuguero, we stayed at the Tortuga Lodge and just loved it. Check out the reviews on tripadvisor and see what you think. It's a little more expensive than some of the other lodges, but they offer private tours ...

We did it alone, and I wish we had hired a guide. We were there for a couple of hours and saw ants. I've read reports from other people who went with guides, and they saw some howlers and vipers. Getting a guide will give you a much better shot at spotting something. And if you don't, you'll at least get interesting info. about the flora and fauna in the area. It was a very pretty hike, but it ...

Last time, I took out colones from the ATM at SJO (I used the one near the departure tax desk, upstairs), and I'm really glad I did it. I do think I saved some money by using colones instead of dollars whenever possible (though you will pay a % on your debit card for the withdrawal probably, so maybe it evens out?).

You might eventually be able to start a 501 3c which will get you more bang for your bucks and really get something going. I work with a program in Mexico and we now have support for over 600 kids though school due to the generosity of people like you.

Remember that in February, there will be an influx of college students for Reading Week (from Canada, at least). And in March, there will be the Spring Break crowd. Neither of these will affect you much, if you're staying at one of the more pricey or family-oriented hotels, but do keep it in mind. Definitely avoid staying at the Oasis Cancun that time of year, unless that is what you're looking ...

PV is more gay friendly, but would also be fun if that is not your thing. Cabo would offer somewhat better snorkeling, but the water is not particularly warm. I would choose the place I could get the best airfare/lodging deal.
Tough decision since both are great. We like the dryer, desert climate of Cabo, so that's what we would pick.

Do you already know where you're staying on the Osa? We thought visiting the animal sanctuary was cool. We also did an early morning birding tour that was great. A night hike could be fun too.

I have not been to either, but Punta Islita looks to be very "honeymoonish". I would pick there. BUT - I think you should arrange your trip for 2 locations instead of 3. 2 nights in BdC or PI would not be enough because of travel time. You may want to consider your last 2 nights at the Peace Lodge since it is closer to San Jose.

Xandari is worth it but if you're feeling like staying within a budget we also like Hotel Villa Bonita. Both that and Xandari are actually closer to the airport than Hotel Grano de Oro.

Not a good deal. You can rent a car for under $30 USD per day.
If you are staying less than a week, this is cheaper even if you park it at the hotel the whole stay and don't have any side trips planned! Reserve ahead to get good prices.
Here is one of many, many agencies with cars at Cancun airport:

The Royal Playa del Carmen is a great resort. Adults only, all inclusive, good service and food. Right in Playa..just a five minute walk from the center of town. You will sometimes get some locals on the beach there since all beaches are public in Mexico.

You can fly from Flores/Tikal to Belize Intl or drive from Tikal and enter Belize at the western border. Are you flying back home from GUA or BZE? You can fly from BZE to GUA. If you drive in, you can stay at one of the lodges in the Cayo district for more Maya sites, caves trips, zip lines, river and horse trips and waterfalls. Or travel direct to the beaches. The easiest would be Ambergris ...
