degas, I guess at 19 you understood all the consequences of not doing well in school, getting drunk after the football game, lying to your parents, marrying the wrong person at a young age, getting pregnant at a young age, dropping out of college and not finishing school, etc. Children's brains are not fully formed and their ability to understand consequences is why the law requires they have parents or guardians who ARE responsible for...

Speaking of "bill", they brought Bill Clinton up to the Capital today. We'll see what's up with THAT? They are looking for anything, just anything at all to show how "progressive" they all are.

Where is that Buffalo grass vodka? Stocks also jumped as investors grew more confident that governments around the world will keep interest rates low to help the global economy." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3683270/ns/business-stocks_and_economy/ I am still...

One year is a long time. Make sure she has the annual check-up before she goes. Also, make sure her health insurance coverage is world-wide and won't expire. Is she taking any medications, and how will she renew the prescriptions? Also, please forgive me for bringing it up, but at her age... if her life is over, or a major injury like a broken hip occurs, you need an insurance that would pay for transporting the body - and this is in...

Spanish in different countries
Published (2009-11-10 19:19:00)
Needless to say, I accidently hit the submit button prematurely. As far as Spanish being spoken in a town, region, or country, varies greatly depending on wealth of country, universal education, and the amount of tourism or business conducted by English speaking companies. And then you have idioecentric variables such is in Antigua, Guatemala, where there are many English schools and tutors in a country that is otherwise poor.

If you can wait 12 months for an answer, my daughter would be the one to ask. She is majoring in Spanish (part of a double major) at a Southern US college, where the Spanish she learns is primarily Spain-Spanish. In the local community people there speak Puerto Rico or Dominican Spanish. This summer she is going to start a 6-month stay in Argentina. She will combine this with a mild Boston ...

Yes, the next two months will be challenging, but, as you said, we have this great support group right here. I actually find this better than the meetings.
So, here's wishing you and all the rest of us losers a great month!

I don't understand either. It seems some people are just too prickly, too easily bothered by differences. You see it here on the lounge, with quick retorts to perceived slights, stubborn grudges, etc. Some here are accepting, for others it's their way or the highway. It's sad, interesting, and reassuring because often the people who seem to us too narrow and rigid in some discussions can be ...

Gosh darnit, Europe is a big place and it takes a while to see it all. Don't like it? Too bad. No one is stopping you from going wherever it is you'd like to go, so why moan and groan about other peoples' choices?

"Classroom crucifixes were made compulsory by two laws in the 1920s when Italy was a fascist state.
They have been applied less rigorously since 1984, when Catholicism ceased to be the state religion."

I saw this on the news last night. Apparently the best thing to do if you own a Toyota is and I may not have understood completely but:
1) rip out the floor mat
2) if this doesnt' work, slam hard on the brake
3) engage the parking break
4) put the car in neutral
I have a Toyota Prius so I am a little concerned.
