On Tuesday I figure out why the block between my apartment and the Boulevard Henri IV smells like piss. I have been puzzled by this. It is not an area filled with bars and there are no visible signs of men making their way home at late hours and marking their territory like cats. I grew up using the New York subways, so I am not unfamiliar with such smells, but I have not seen any telltale rivulets on the sidewalks. After a bit of research, I...

I based in Perugia ( a big town but i like towns) and did wondrous day trips from there to such Umbrian gems as Gubbio, Urbino (not sure in Umbria) and Todi and Cortona - Assisi is close by as well. and the Amalfi Coast area has so so much - Pompeii - Ercolo - climb up to the crater of Mt Vesuvius (bus to staging area) and boats to Capri, Ischia - and of course the wonderful Amalfi towns - Ravello, Amalfi, Positano, etc. - Few areas IMO have...

I will just throw in the thought of Gramat in the Lot while we're at it. It is quite a small town but is on a line that still has 2 or 3 trains a day to Paris-Austerlitz. It is part of the Rocamadour website: http://www.rocamadour.com/

Hi D, >I'm thinking now.........< Sounds like a great trip. Whether you drop the car in Sorrento or Salerno, the drive times and the costs should be about the same. The difference is that Salerno gives you a chance to see the AC from the water. The ferry is aboout 3 blks from the train station. Plenty of room on the ferry for your luggage. Your hotel can arrange for a porter to bring your stuff up from the ferry. Enjoy your...

You must get a good Italy book and read. See what calls out for you. That being said, we have based in Spoleto and Perugia and did bus and train trips easily from both. Although we did end up getting a driver for Montepulciano and Montalchino for speed. For climbing, perhaps you should read about Cinque Terre?

You shouldn't need a converter, only an outlet adapter. I would buy two or three outlet adapters for a few books each.

Nothing Fodorites like as much as a blank cheque.
Well, if I understand correctly: you have 10 days in which to see Italy and get to Avignon.
How do you travel to Avignon? By train or car?
As we go to Rome for a week each year -- and hunger to return each time we leave -- I cannot imagine limiting myself to 2-3 days there.
It is the perfect city, May is the perfect month for seeing...

hi J&D,
you will find loads of help here if you decide to book everything yourself; rather less if you decide on a tour as most of the people here have comne to the concluding that you can do better if you "DIY".
assuming you are coming from the US, the classic 1st time trip is to fly into Venice, then get the reain to Florence, and then the train again to Rome, flying home from there - ...

The Hotel de la Porte Doree looks very pretty, although it is at the far eastern edge of town, be prepared for some long metro rides (however, at least going into town, you're likely to get a seat).
The Hotel du Printemps is closer in, which might a good idea in case your husband gets tired. Ditto for Grand Hotel de L'Avenue.
For your budget, you seem to have chosen some nice properties, ...

I've posted on passenger car ferries from Mainland Italy to Sicily, Spain, Malta and Tunisia, but I've saved "the best for last": ferries from Mainland Italy to Sardinia.
A couple of introductory observations:
1. There are five "ports of call" on Sardinia which have passenger car ferry service: Porto Torres (useful for Sassari and Alghero), Golfo Aranci, Olbia (these two useful for...

99.9% of the hotels mentioned in previous posts are within the Ring. That's the area you would want to stay in. If you're within the Ring, you can pretty much walk to most of the sights in the old city section.

I recommend that you extend your stay in Istanbul, if you can.
You would need two full days for the standard, 'must see' sites, and depending on the type of Bosphorus cruise either half a day or another full day.
the traditional cruise will require almost a full day because it includes a 90-180 minute stop at the end of the Bosphorus, for lunch and a hike up to the old castle, for amazing ...

Well you are looking for exactlty the type of Europeon hotel I don't like. After 7 trips to Europe I much prefer the small boutique local type hotels down the little side alleys but that is me not you.
You might want to go to tripadvisor and start your hotel search there. Once you get some ideas come back and ask about them.Have you traveled to Europe before and if so what cities and what ...

kerouac,
I think I responded to his asking for restauranats nearby his apartment, or in the area, at least. I could have given him restaurants all over Paris, but he specifically asked for nearby ones.

Sorry to hear about your husband's accident. I cannot imagine a person with two broken vertebrae wearing a brace flying across the ocean and getting on and off a bus on a tour and sitting for long periods of time on that bus. Isn't there a city in the U.S. (if you live in the U.S.) that would interest you?
If not, considering he can't lift more than one gallon of milk and you'll be doing all ...

I don't understand it either why so many people worry about what they are going to wear in Paris. I saw a couple of women carrying Hermes bags but no Loubuotin shoes, nothing too fancy. A lot of flat boots and leggings.
I just got back yesterday and I miss Paris already. sigh.

When traveling without DH, I take my mobile phone (which is just an ordinary phone, not a Blackberry or iPhone) and my digital camera. With DH, it's Blackberry, netbook, two digital cameras, Kindle, and portable DVD player (if we're taking a very long international train trip).

Carcassonne is not a semi-rural small village or town by any stretch. Plus, it's overrun with tourists. It certainly wouldn't hold any appeal for me.
But first the logistics. You do realize you can't just pack up and go live in France, I hope. Do you have French citizenship? Hold an EU passport? Have the proper paperwork from the French government? If not, that's where you should start your ...
