For Australia, I'd think about the balance between cities and visiting the countryside. I love cities, but most Australian cities are not hugely interesting in the global scheme of things, whereas the natural environment, and the animals in it, are spectacular. For example, in Tasmania you are visiting Hobart, Freycinet which is very beautiful, but then Launceston which from my memory doesn't have a lot to offer tourists. I'd...

I'm having difficulty thinking of anything in Auckland that you couldn't see under your own steam, based on a little prior research using a good guide book. I'd be happy to be corrected, though. While this doesn't mean that her comments should be dismissed out of hand, it's as well to be aware that the previous poster (Lisa_SeeANZ) appears to work for a Chicago travel agency. This may or may not explain her...

Hi Neil, Well, I'm not surprised - he was a little unusual to say the least. And of course, it is understood that you had nothing whatsoever to do with the whole sordid business. And fyi, I think all his posts have been wiped off and are now in cyber space forever. Oh and the dollar has slipped 2cents as we speak! Doh!

I know the US credit cards cover the LDW, but the Europcar rental seems to include this too. I will be getting the extra insurance too! Can I better AUD 350 for a 3 day rental from airport, with unlimited mileage? A lot of the others are closed on Jan 1, making it essential for me to rent from airport... Thanks for the tip on tram rules. Had a tough time with them in another city...

Trip Report - Lord Howe, ADL,...

Wow, really lovely photos. We were on Lizard recently, but did not make it up Cook's Lookout so it was a treat to see pix from the top. Also I have been wanting to go back to Lord Howe for about 40 years--I was there as a kid and have such tremendous memories of it. We flew there on a flying boat that took off and landed in the water. It was my very first snorkeling experience. Wow, again, thank you for posting the photos !!

That is great! I have found that quite often the site indicated in a Australian magazine or newspaper is not quite accurate - and this is frustrating so do understand how this happens. I hope lots of people from other parts of the world look at this list - it is a very beautiful place. Thanks for the info...

5 days! You don't say when you are going - you don't consider or say where you would be arriving into so its impossible to answer your question but if I had to I would definately suggest going to Nimbin cause its certainly different.

We will be in Perth in early March also, for about a week. We are planning time to visit Margaret River as we both like the water, and wineries too. What other suggestion do you have, Melinq8 ? Thanks, Gail

I second Bokhara's recomendation for Rydges Hotels.
World Square Sydney was great value in sept, Canberra Rydges was being renovated but should be close to completion soon.
Tip- Make sure you sign up for their Rydges priority guest card before you book. (you can do it on line). That will give you an additional 10% discount off prices.

Hello namest,
I think you have made a great choice to use a private guide, especially as you have limited time and some local knowledge is most certainly the way to go. The other point of note is that as you have 2 couples traveling it is really great value to pay a little bit of a premium, which will average out nicely across your group. I have used private guides for years in all parts of ...

WEST COAST/GLACIERS
This was the day we were worried about. Driving from Nelson straight to the glaciers was something many people on this forum advised against. The road is narrow and windy, and it would likely rain -- a lot -- we were warned. But we really, really wanted to take a heli-hike on the glacier and couldn’t bring ourselves to cross it off our itinerary no matter how out of the way ...

Hi Kay -
Here's an excerpt from the trip report which covers our time in Akaroa (2003 prices). We stayed in an 1850’s cottage on the seafront in Duvauchelle, located 10 km from Akaroa
>We woke to a beautiful day. We drove to Akaroa, stopping at the Visitor’s Center to book a 1:30 pm harbor cruise on the Canterbury Cat ($39 each) and a 3:45 pm tour of the Pohatu Penguin Reserve ($40 each)....

We did a 6 week trip to NZ and Australia Jan 9 to Feb 24 this year. That included a trip on both the Indian Pacific and the Ghan. My husband is a train fan also and we both loved the Indian Pacific - Sydney to Perth. I highly recommend this trip! The one on the Ghan wasn't as much fun/ not really worth the cost. There were a number of Australians on the train to Perth and it was great to visit ...

I've only tried the Arnott's Tim Tams you can get at Cost Plus, but I will - in the interests of research, of course - sample the Pepperidge Farm variety.

Thanks for the AWESOME trip report, Justin and Crystal. It was informational, scenic and inspirational as well! I enjoyed re-visiting places we have been and getting good ideas for new places. One question--what was the name of the resort on Lord Howe Island? Would you recommend it? It looks quite pricey!

We rented from one of the majors, can't remember which one. There appear to be six rental companies at the Melbourne airport - Avis, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty, Europecar and Redspot.

I have been to NZ 3 times, but they were all during the summer months (Dec - Feb). Having lived in Australia for a time, I know that the NZ winters can be cold and rainy, but I wasn't sure how much so. Take a look at the following website for details on average temperatures, rainfall, etc. http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/city_guides/res ults.shtml?tt=TT003100

Hi Jenwar, Just a thought.
Are you hiring the car?
If so why not give it back for a few days and re hire when you need it.
Many of the big hire companies are based near the CBD.

I don't follow...you have a campervan, but want to take the train?
Can you collect the campervan in Greymouth? If so, I'd suggest taking the train from Christchurch to Greymouth, collecting your vehicle and driving from there.
We took the Tranzalpine both ways on our first visit to NZ, and it was a long day. Had I known better, I'd have only taken it one way.
The brewery in Greymouth...
