A professional production with the choir, not what you expected in the crater I am sure. Your Lion Country Safari comment brought back happy distant memories and smile to my face, I admit. Glad LCS never materialized for you. Will check photos next time.

The same way I rarely do morning game drives, likewise, don't do "bush loos" - why I don't drink on game drives, not even for "sundowners." They're always pushing liquid on me, which if the offeree won't take a smiling "no" I sip, swish and spit... no swallowing.

If you have an interest in Sheldricks and the Giraffe Center, I would pay the extra $$ and stay at Giraffe Manor. I stayed there 2 nts in Feb07 at the beginning of a Kenya/Tanzania trip and it was worth every penny. The giraffes were around most of the time (especially if they thought treats were in order). The stuck their heads in to take breakfast from the table, they came up to the front door and gently took offered treats and we had one...

Have you inquired of the upscale tour companies Micato, Abercrombie & Kent (A&K), Cazenove & Loyd? Or are you after even more "upscale" than they offer. (I wish ). regards - tom

At the beginning, I thought you were working directly with Trans Africa. Given that you are working with an agent, then I would guess your agent is a member of Virtuoso. Virtuoso is an organization call a consortium. A consortium is an organization of travel agents formed to collectively negotiaite better prices on behalf of the members. They also help the travel agents signficantly with marketing and in the vetting of service providers....

I'm glad you didn't experience Ngorongoro madness--on two trips I was able to avoid most of it, but then again I never saw a choir singing down there. Or up at the top, either. It will be a very scenic video, I'm sure! Good pairing of lion brothers and Danish sisters.

As promised, here's the first installment of the trip report.
This installment will cover our first day on the road: FROM ARUSHA TO TARANGERIE and our first game drive in the park. Also, we'll share impressions and photos of our stay at BOUNDARY HILL LODGE, which was fantastic!
I’m not really technically competent, so I’ll try to format this in a way that coincides with the photos I hope ...

I have known of Trans Africa safaris for many years. Herbie Rosenberg used to be one of the owners and he was friends with my Mom and Dad (close enough where he has stayed in their home in South Africa). Trans Africa is a competitor of my company but I will admit they should do a good job for you. They work directly with clients from the US and act as a middle man to book safaris. Herbie ...

September might still be quite hot, October somewhat better as it starts cooling.
Jerash is about 30-45/min north of Amman. Can spend the morning here and then head south to Petra... spend 3/nts-2/days. Wadi Rum isn't far from here for 1/nt-1/day. Then, on the way north stop at the Dead Sea for a few days of R&R. Depart.

- June: shortly after the "long rains" means grass is high, everything supposed to be GREEN but wildlife is harder to find/see depending where you will be heading.
rates are lower than in peak season which startd mid/end of July
- September: getting drier so wildlife is easier to observe and the Wildebeast migration has already started.
Both above is considered "normal" means if weather ...

Day 7, you might consider staying on the Crater Rim at either the Serena or Sopa lodge. The Plantation Lodge is near Karatu and you'll be backtracking on Day 8 going to the Serengeti.
I like Pongwe... nice beachfront lodge. I'd suggest adding a night in Stone Town at the Serena, Tembo House, or another place and doing a tour of the town. Then, you're close to the airport for your departure.

I have stayed at Chada and Greystoke and both were absolutely fabulous. I dont know anything about Katuma but the pro's of doing Greystoke and Katavi together are that they are sister camps, you probably have some of the same in the group doing the same rotation and transportation can be seamless. Chada is smaller, intimate and very relaxing. Certainly not over the top but a very mellow ...

LV and Mombo are delta areas, so technically March/April will be just before the bulk of the okavango floods hits the delta areas. Mombo on Chief's island - if you can still access areas that are not impacted by the floods ......... go for it! Kalahari should be at it's best during the rains ...... so again March should be good.
My vote would be March/April given your choice of camps....

1 Arusha arrive that eve
1 Day in Arusha
1-2 Lake Manyara
1-2 Crater
3-5 Serengeti--you'd want Southern Serengeti
3+ Zanzibar
10 days minimum in TZ
To go to Kenya, allow 1 travel day between countries, meaning 11 of the 14 days are used up.
That would give you 3 in Kenya's Maasai Mara--4 if you did not spend a day in Arusha National Park.
I'd either spend more time in Tanzania or ...

Forgot to ask.....
Do I need to pay with cash or can I pay with a credit card? I know sometimes vendors charge more when customers use a credit card.
How long does it take to make a cartouche?
Thank you.

You can find flight schedules at www.airkenya.com and www.safarilink.com . To fly between Amboseli and the Mara, you'll connect in Nairobi and you need to fly Amboseli-Nairobi-Mara as the schedule doesn't work the other way around.
I personally love Aberdare NP and its forest landscape but you'd have to be extremely lucky to see a bongo or melanistic leopard. I believe the nearest ...

I confess the vehicle seat config is what puts me off the most as I would ABSOLUTELY not want a middle seat in row of three. And to be honest, wouldn't be ideal having some one sitting in that seat either as that's where husband and I usually put our camera bag etc.

Welcome back to you and Mrs. K! And thank you. I have trouble falling asleep and this dull report may help me get much-needed zzz's before my Monday morning alarm.
Rather concerning about the rains.
Looking forward to more.

If I were you I would do a max of one morning and maybe an afternoon gamedrive organised by the camps but certainly do gamedrives myself in the rented car.
Frankly - doing gamedrives in my own (rented) car is much more rewarding than the "organised" ones - particularly with the huge vehicles going out of restcamps.
As you mention "nature": what can be more "nature" than doing gamedrives ...

Nile cruises generally go between Luxor and Aswan. You would have to fly or bus to Abu Simbel and/or Cairo.

Hi Villiers
There is a fodorite who did a selfdrive camping trip in 2009 KENYA and TAZ and as far as I recollect it was canadianrobin (sorry if I mix something up here) who will help you here.
But you might make use of the search engine to find her trip report.
Sorry - I cannot help with selfdrive as we only do fly-in safaris.
It would be wonderful if you could publish some of your ...
