There are a few mom-and-pops that say on their website: "We reserve the right to refuse to rent to you if you do not provide proof of full coverage insurance and decline to purchase ours." Payless outside EWR does this. Those are typically bottom-feeders whose low advertised prices come with all sorts of revenue enhancement catches. You could try and speak with the manager to see if they would match the rate, but really the only way they will get it is if you rent from somebody else at half the price and then forward them the receipt showing they lost the business because they were twice as much. Hertz is fully capable of checking the rates, it's not at all unusual in some places for them to be two (or well over three in ANC last year) times the rate of the others....

As stated in the previous thread - just completed my re-upping and paid my $1200 for 2010 Plat Status. While renting mostly in OZ - with the odd monthly trip to LHR/FRA/LAX - I've had nothing but stellar service at these locales. Out of interest what have you been booking and receiving in Australia ? Not a big selection of cars down here, basically all Toyota's and a few Holden (GM) Commodores for luxury cars.
