Haven't done the route myself but I always figured that when I do, I'll transit via FRA, ZRH etc.

LH is very good at protecting cnx pax at FRA.I have personally managed to make the 1 hour cnx and miss the cnx. Should be plenty of other flights to Florence on LH.

Either go on the earlier flight or keep what you have but every so often we all have to accept an RJ. Don't you want to cuddle up to your SO? It'll be closer on an RJ than a J seat. The understanding is that an LMU is offered if there is upgrade space available, so if there is no R class (hence the waitlist), then LMU wouldn't be offered.
