Yes, that is exactly what I was asking, because I see my husband and a couple of friends looking to buy a DSLR, and Canon XSi is always easily available. But if one had an old Canon film camera, those lenses would be unusable on an XSi, as I understand from your replies - I know for sure that would be factor for one of my friends. That's good to know, thank you. Yep -- although if they have a newer (autofocus) Canon film camera, the...

Thank you Kgreggbruce, that gave me a lot to think about, and a great way to start looking into other equipment I may want to get instead of just a CLS flash. Thank you!

The only time I've used a hand held is at formal gatherings such as weddings. You usually have crap (at best) light and people wearing highly reflective clothing. A woman wearing lycra stockings standing next to a man who wears black pants with enough rayon in them is enough to drive you crazy with zig/zag screen patterns. In that situation, rather than asking them to stand still while I blow through 5 or 6 shots to get the exposure just...

Indoor, low light, action shots. It's a really bad combination. As kukkurovaca stated, lenses and flashes both have their pros and cons. I'd say it's much less risky to get a flash, instead of a lens. I have an SB600, and a 50mm f/1.4, and for indoor action, i find myself relying on the flash much more often. I took this picture with an D40X, 18-55mm, and a SB600. www.flickr.com/photos/squareee/3561487647/in/set-72157618......

As Roelan_VDL says, the function button isn't just timer, it can be programmed. I usually use it for ISO as well, and I've occasionally used it for white balance for shooting indoors to switch from preset for natural light to flash regularly. If I had to choose between the D3000 or Canon XSi, I'd just try both, see sample shots at various ISO settings, and see what I prefer in terms of how easy they are to use, and what the...

I also put the LCD screen brightness at -2 Otherwise you would miss underexposure, and to a certain extent, any colour flatness would be masked Might be why the D40 blows highlights in certain circumstances, to try to get some more "pop" in their photos

It will work, like photographing lightning + landscape. Be aware that you could end up with a multiple exposure effect if several people take flash photos within that 2 sec. This could be a cool effect to do, if the ambient light is low enough...

those poor, poor, palm trees! hope most people are able to stay safe and warm.
Well, I tend to take pictures that have snow in them, because we have an awful lot of it. And as you know (or are about to find out) it varies a lot in whiteness or greyness and even tone - blue to yellow - depending on the sky and time of day. So in part, you'll find yourself fiddling with exposure ...

Yes. The best solution I found was to run windows explorer in 32 bit mode. There you will see the thubnail of the pictures. Once this were created you can use the 64 bit version of the explorer and you will still see the thubnail since these were created before.

Well, I wouldn't go to a D3000 from a D60. Minimally I'd go to a D5000. Otherwise you're not really getting much bang for your buck.
Regarding lens lineup -- a lot depends on what specific lenses you're looking to buy. I'd suggest pricing out the upgrade options for various focal lengths you expect you'll want to buy down the road.

The D5000 is better in low light than the D3000. The D5000 uses a similar sensor to the D300, D90, and D300s. The D3000 uses a similar sensor to the old D200, D80, D40x, and D60.
Get the D5000 :D.

Autofocus fisheye lenses don't generally come cheap.
Moderately cheap are manual focus fisheye lenses -- sometimes Sigma ones crop up for $200, give or take, I think. There's also a Russian one that's more common. However, these are older lenses designed for film cameras, and therefore you won't get the full fish effect on a DX digital camera like your D60.
There are also ...

perhaps a neutral density filter and slightly longer exposures, its a shame our entry level cameras dont have live view , as this would be ideal in this instance......

save a lot of money, forget about CLS and get (one or more of) an sb-24, 25 or 26; latter preferred as it has an optical slave built-in. either trigger with a cable or wireless trigger or (in the case of an sb-26) via the slave from your popup flash (manually set to minimum).

There are lots fo good technical resources online, but not *so* many that are intended to help you develop an "eye."
There are books devoted to teaching composition, etc., but personally, I think the best way to learn that sort of thing is to (a) shoot a lot, and (b) look at a lot of photographs.
Flickr is good for looking at photographs, but don't just use flickr. If ...

I am having the same problem and I have only had mine about 8 months. I was about to call them this coming week. Please tell me this is just an odd glitch we happened to have and it's not the norm.

1. 32
2. No.
3. Simple, I've got my style groups (portrait, b+w, tilt-shift etc), my equipment groups (Cameras, flashes etc.), and my location groups (work, city, country).
I also have some generic groups for getting some views. Egolicious.

Check out this site Manfrotto Interactive Guide
Enter the info on what you shoot with or plan to shoot with and it will give you recommendations on legs and head. Since you already have the legs just look for a head

D5000 - it has CMOS sensor unlike D3000 CCD sensor (previous generation of sensor). Its low-light performance is also much better than D3000's

The AF motor deal with the D5000 is the same with the D60 you have. For lenses to AF, you need an AF-S lens. Lenses like the 50mm f/1.8D won't AF, but will still mount, meter, and otherwise work, except for the fact that you have to manually focus.
The video mode will probably disappoint you. It's not really meant to be a camcorder, there's no AF during video but if you are ...
