I think you mean that you got an EN-EL4A, right? Everyone should get the grip, especially to balance big glass. I use
NiMh AA's instead of the D3 battery. Works great and is far cheaper. Be aware the the grip shutter release is very touchy. You'll get used to it though. Also, you can turn the grip release off when you are not using it so that you don't accidentally bump it....

Unless you really NEED VR, then look at the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D - Every bit as sharp if not more so than the 70-200mm VR but potentially more than $1000 less. LAst I checked I could get one of these new for ~ $1000
You can replace the 18-70
variabel aperture with a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 for around $400 - $550
Those would be my suggestions.

I test drove both programs and to be honest neither one really jumped out at me and screamed "LOOK HOW AWESOME I AM!" In the end I decided I didn't wanna spend $200-$300 on software that I'm going to spend a minimal amount of time in so I went with Photoshop Elements 8 and use
Adobe Camera Raw through Bridge to edit and tag all my files.

I'm guessing something is pressing against the shutter release on the battery grip. It's a sensitive little button.

After a city trip or a long (event) shoot with my
D300, 17-55 2.8 and grip attached, I actually enjoy holding a lighter camera :-) Just for that reason, I would actually like to own a D60/D40 or something like it :-)
