Yeah, I definitely don't have this problem. Sounds like you need to get your lens checked out by Nikon.

I thought the same thing at least up till recently. While it doesn't give the results of the new 14-24 or 24-70, and 70-280, it does hold its own against other lenses. I bought a 24mm f2.8 nikon prime thinking it would be sharper than the 24 mm setting of the 18-200, I was wrong the 18-200 with the vr was actually visibly sharper than the 24mm prime! Have you tried stopping it down to ...

Although these are somewhat 'cheated' (last one in a zoo, first two I shot secretly from behind a window with bird treats at the spot I was aiming at :)

The VR systems are the same in the two lenses, both VR II. The only differences are that the new lens adds a zoom lock switch at 18mm on the lens barrel, and a couple of the elements in the new lens are said to have an improved coating that is supposedly more effective in reducing glare and flare. Those are the only two differences.

What do you mean by 'large'? Are the ceilings high? Love the SB-900. It covers 18-200 but also wider is you put the
diffuser on. If the ceiling isn't too high, I generally aim the light up or use the built in bounce card to avoid direct flash. Going wireless with the SB-900 is the best. Just set it on a table near by and have the popup command it... again to avoid direct flash. Well ...

Be careful where you get one from. I was highly irritated to learn that the Tiffen filter I paid $88 for at a local
camera store was available for half that price online! I'm all in favor of supporting local camera stores, but not if they're going to gouge me like that, and then charge sales tax besides.
Regarding vignetting--the doofus at this camera store sold me the regular...

VR 1?... $550. I got mine for $500 with a slight scratch outside the housing.
