for some reason, if I hold the shutter down for a good second or longer, and then release I don't get the second flash.

Another big factor in xpro is where you get it processed. Whatever you do, dont get it processed by Sprectrum in Newcastle unless you like photos that look like green vomit.

My Girlfriend's 120 CFN focus barrel is pretty loose and easy to turn compared to my 120 S . You could always just hold the lens barrel when your taking a photo to ensure proper focus distance.

Oh I'm very cynical. I let down my guard for a minute. NEVER AGAIN! :)

In all likelihood you will end up 'experimenting' with double exposures whether you want to or not. When I started, I tried to make a special point of winding on each time, but still slipped up a couple of times (the lens cap is another thing to watch out for). Normally I can't stand them, but I was actually quite pleased with this one:

that's the problem i'm having...it appears to be on perfectly about 2/3 of the way around the lens, and then there's a portion that's askew. argh. many thanks for the help!

Sounds like you are on your way to Holga Adventureland! :D
As far as I know, the majority of 120Ns have only the one functioning aperture, mine certainly does.
I have heard rumours that the newer ones have both apertures in place properly however but I have never seen one in hand.
Good luck! :D

This went surprisingly well except that my drilled aperture looks ever so slightly elliptical, and very slightly off centre. I'm talking about fractions of millimetres, but does anyone know whether this will make much difference to my pictures?
Nope! At least, no appreciable difference, given the other qualities of the Holga's optics.
Also, do you still get much vignetting ...

I don't think mine is *that* loose, but then it's been stepped on and had beer spilt on it over a few years... If it gets annoying, might be worth changing, but otherwise don't worry about it, IMHO.

a black background, like a yard at night or black velvet keeps the film unexposed, that way you can put plenty of images on one negative, or if your cavorting in the day, get the slowest speed film you can, and click to your content, if 400 iso is the average speed in a holga, than use 100iso and lower to keep a normal density when shooting multiples.

go for what ever is cheapest and smallest. I personally sought after one that wouldnt effect the camera's center of gravity too much.

I remember seeing a 35mm adaptor kit made by someone like Superheadz that came with masks to allow you to shoot square, panoramic or panoramic with sprocket holes but it cost more than the a Holga!
You could try to just make your own square mask out of thin card and tape and fit it to the adaptor.
If you havent bought it yet, another possibility would be to get a Diana Mini as...

The most common mistake is to have the shutter set on "B" (open as long as you press the shutter). This would explain the blurry photos. If you had a lot of vignetting and saw light leaks with a newer Holga I'd guess you didn't use either of the supplied masks.
They are good, but you've got to want to work with their idiosyncrasies so they are not for everyone.
It sounds ...

experiment with it and have fun! :D if you have read up alot about them then you should be fine with it its a great camera, and if that film is b&w find somewhere to develop them before taking pics might be easyer and cheaper to start with colour

Take a knife and carefully bevel the inside edge of the holga lens where the ring will mount. It does not take much. Then the step up will screw on with some effort. The hard part is getting it to go on straight!!
