To me it's been better than what I thought it would be. To me it's not really macho, unless you go Gilden-style. Rather, what I've learned here is that it has lots of finesse and is incredibly nuanced with all its flavors -uhhh, phylums (phyla for you Romans), as they say. I'm rather pleased to learn that it long transcended caffe-bourgeois (stereotype I had). I'm happy to see it's all around, from the...

Street ethos. the fundamental character or spirit of a culture; the underlying sentiment that informs the beliefs, customs, or practices of a group or society The taste of the group is informed by the street aesthetic, which can be found in all types of photography. Does the orange light from the house on the far left bother anyone else? I find it distracting. My eye keeps going to it.

I'm not quite sure if i like this images or not at the moment. I like the guy and the motion in the shot but for me i would of prefered a bit more in the shot instead of his head being the main bulk of it. It seems to just take up to much room and makes everything too tightly compact. I think if it showed a bit of his body and a tad more of the surroundings then i would really like this one.

this is a great shot also (duh) but I dont really see much of a point in discussing it. The other one had a lot more to react to. Positively or negatively, which, i imagine, is what made the admins choose it for discussion (again duh). This one all comes down to black and white, grit and grain, in your face (well in his face anyways), either you like that shit or you dont. I see this as a failed experiment in democracy. Can we please return...

Those that have been enthusistic about street photography for several years find themselves in the predicament of the connoisseur. A connoisseur in any field of interest moves progressively further away from the neophyte's appreciation of the same interest. They like weird wines, weird music, weird paintings... the same thing happens with street photography. The folks outside of or new to the interest can't understand why the...

this one works for me, where the previous discussion image failed...
it has drama, focus, an edginess to it, and it is unusual enough to keep you coming back to it....
Unpretentious and striking.....
a touch too much head room perhaps, but otherwise i would not change a thing......

I saw a book at a market the other day. The book was by a street photographer from the UK (Bristol I think). It was street photography during the war era and I could have sworn the name was 'Cullen' but internet searches arent yielding any results. Sorry this is a little vague but does anyone know who this might be?

"given the amount of submissions you guys must receive"
haha, If you saw what we receive then I doubt you'd be surprised.
but if we see something we like which exists outside of the normal circles, then we're bound to invite it.

Folks,
can we compile in this thread a list of all the other street photography groups hosted by HCSP members?
I'm looking for a particular specialty group that was formed for night time street photography, but those terms are too generic to get me what I'm looking for.
If you're hosting another street group, please post the info here with a link and short description....

I know this question was posted before but it was a while ago and my question is perhaps a bit more specific.
I live in North America (Southern Califronia) and came across a print magazine called Photoworks (published in England) and really enjoyed it. I'm now wondering what other photography magazines are out there (international, mail only, etc...) focused on great content/works...

I was reviewing my stream recently and reflecting on the difference between what I envisioned when I started street photography and what it actually is. I think the first couple of books I looked at were David Alan Harvey's "Cuba" and Alex Webb's "Istanbul". Based on those, I imagined that my street photography would basically be location heavy, pretty colored moving masses type ...

Story Here
Repeated questioning and harassment and finally issuing an order barring him from entering over 60 businesses in the center of Burlington, even though he never photographed while on private property.

Lately I've been goofing around a bit more with my speedlights and taking it to the street. All of these shots are take using 3 lumipro speedlights with a white umbrella. Always game for an open critique of my work I invite the HCSPcommunity to have at and tell me what they think....

There's been some discussion by the guys of fotografi di strada about getting a camper van, sticking a lot of prints on it and driving it from Italy to the Arles festival in July.
Would any other countries be up for such a challenge? I wonder how much renting a van is if you tip in between ten people...

I was very glad to read Nick Turpin's post on "Vitually Invisible Street Photographers" , especially so that he featured Jun Abe, whose work I first mentioned here .
I'm pretty sure that there's a tonne of street photographers out there, from both past and present, who are hardly known, if at all! Or at least known only in their home countries. So, taking our cue from Nick, this...
