It's better if you're already a Videographer who's used to shooting with a manual focus camera. It's not a replacement to a camcorder which people often confuse it. It's a way to get film quality video at a budget price. Therefore shooting style is totally different. You have to think about your shots in short takes that don't require a lot of focusing. If you do need to focus, you need to practice a lot. The IS...

My next lens will probably be a 14mm, so expensive. That or wait a bit to see if Canon does indeed release a 12-24 f/2.8 L, That would be amazing. Hopefully. But in any case Canon has so many great lenses, zoom and primes. My favorite wider prime of their is the 35mm 1.4! That thing is amazing.

I did a fair bit of research and ended up with not the polarizer but the B+W thin double coated UV on my 16-35II, it's never left the glass, not even at night. I had cheapo Canon filters but have switched all of my lenses over to these B+W's, they are truly the shizzle. :-)

A 'do it all' lens? Well, as others have already pointed out the 24-105 is a sort off do-it-all for the average user. To claim however that it will cover 90% of your particular style of shooting would be a silly statement, not knowing what you shoot and how. So, for average usage by the hypothetical 'average user' Canon recommends the 24-105. You decide if that fits you...we sure can't :) That being said: my most...

Som, the strongest effect is at 90 degrees to the Sun. Yup sometimes I do use a polariser right down to 16mm, but when I do I always also take a shot without it. The effect can be quite interesting and worthwhile when shooting super wide but all too often it just wrecks a good image and nor do I know of any fix for when the banding kicks in.

24-70 f2.8L IS. It's the real analog of the 17-55, which FOV-wise comes out at 28-88. The only thing I disliked when I went to EF-mount only bodies was having to give up the 17-55 with no real replacement. Without IS the current 24-70 isn't interesting. I can often use a lower ISO using the 24-105.

There were some discussions about problems related to serial number when the 5D Mark II came out last year, e.g. I found this on a website: Canon 5D Mark II SN#03201xxxxx seems to show the ‘Black Dot’ problem. Canon 5Dmk2 with SN#02201xxxxx appears to be okay. , but I believe these early problems were solved with a firmware upgrade and since then there were no problems reported anymore. As StirFried said so many 5D Mark II's have...

Another advantage of ISO 50 is when shooting with strobes in bright sunlight . By using ISO 50, I can knock a stop off of my aperture so that the compromise of the ridiculously low sync speed of the MK II is alleviated a little. I'll use a polarizing filter or ND filter at times in conjunction with this. ISO 50 is a great tool for me.

With a 2.8 zoom it will look about the same brightness wise. However it will pop more as far as in / out of focus is concerned. The original screen has a very gentle in / out slope, as the eg-s is quite abrupt. The original screen is optimized for brightness with slower lenses, that's why you don't see much difference between a 1.4 lens and a 4.0 lens. The big difference is ...

I don't think "do it all' lenses exist. But if your budget is $1000 I'd say get the kit lens(24-105 f4L) along with the camera and save yourself a few hundred dollars. I don't own this lens myself but from what I've read, people seem to be happy enough with it. Good range, reasonably sharp but only f4. When I got my 5DII I already had a 70-200 2.8 IS, 50 1.8 and an EFS 17-85 IS. ...

40 is a non-standard length and besides the difference between 35 and 40 is minimal - just crop a tiny bit if you must! 200-400 would be great :o) 135 with IS would be nice but not for the price! IS on wide lenses wouldn't be of any great benefit - you can already hold a 17mm steady at ~1/15th and I would be surprised if IS could take this below half a sec (and would you ...

I don't think you screwed up - I think Bridge caches thumbnails so it is still using the original thumbs (from when you couldn't read them). If you don't have many images I think you can get it to regenerate the thumbs by changing the folder name or moving the images to a new folder. But I've had problems with this before and things I thought would work to regen thumbs had no effect...

Yeah, those red dots look like dead pixels but do try what Stephen Duffy Photography has said. Set the camera down, keep the lens cap on, manual focus on, 100iso, aperture at f22, and use the timer to trigger.
