I just meant that when I've got a shallow depth it's easier to see what is in or
out-of-focus with the magnified view, even if I'm using AF.

A star filter can give good effects. Use a smaller aperture and longer exposure but be sure to try different
exposures for different looks. Also, you can zoom during the exposure to be creative.
I know this shot is outdoors but the same technique can be used indoors.

Surely with the sensor and the processor attached to the lens unit it is going to make them ridiculously expensive.

Wow. Is it sticky, like soda pop residue? If not, it's likely some kind of watery fluid, but I don't believe
clean water. The spots look bubbly and crusty, even the one that are on plastic parts, so could it be milk?
To the left there appears to be some white crystalline stuff that might be from corrosion of the metal parts there. There are other brown spots that look like rust,...
