A monopod/tripod isn't going to cut the mustard. A second or so long exposure gives your average fish bags of time to be somewhere else never mind the grief you'll have in coaxing your autoocus to work.

Some of the fish are quite slow... Having said that, as Matt reiterated, a lot of the tanks have reasonable lighting. Here's one Matt did which I like and when I went by these fish were almost stationary;

Also forgot to mention Pixelmator. It's like a lite version of Photoshop - but don't let that put you off, it likely has all the functionality you would use in photoshop for a lot less money.

The Mall would be the obvious target bearing in mind that Cabots Circus is vaguely photographer friendly. I'm quite keen to get a long exposure shot of the fountains in the middle and those model red arrows at the Debenham's end.

I agree with archidave, iPhoto is already on your Mac and it does the same job as FastStone. Also, the Mac has Preview which is pretty much the fastest image (and many other files including MS Office, PDF, just try it and see if it works etc) viewer you're gonna get. Just select an image and press the space-bar. Then scroll through the images in the folder using your up/down keys...
