Nukes are just what they do in movies, or if it's a last ditch attempt to deflect one that popped up only a few months out from impact. Otherwise if you have decades to play with, it can be as simple as changing the surface composition of the asteroid to get more or less solar forcing, altering the orbit enough, or any of a number of far less boner inducing methods.
