Well said. The A-10 which despite numerous and vigorous attempts to kill it off is as important and needed as ever and looks to be in the plans til at least 2030, the OV-10 Bronco which was retired following two shot down in Iraq in Desert Storm might be coming back (I actually think the T-6 Texan II will get the contract). I agree with the plans to kill the F-22 but was not opposed to keeping production open for foreign buyers. The main...

Well that one was pretty straight forward and I think the basics have been covered. Here's another one, which is not so straight forward: Situation Your battalion is part of an amphibious task force in tropical waters off the coast of Webasto. It is 0420 hours. Sunup is at 0600. The distance from your position to the capital, Zuma, is 5 nautical miles. A civil war is raging in this poor Third World country. Fighting is ongoing outside...

Its a long and storied tradition the Military Industrial Complex. In essence, The military is effectively run by the 'Key' fields of any particular branch. For the Navy its Surface warfare officers, the Army its Infantry guys, and for the AF its always been fighter pilots. The problems arise in that eventually the balance of forces shift, and yesterdays priorities become todays backburner issues. 30 years ago it was the age of the...

A 30 round magazine sounds like a very odd choice for a squad support weapon. The machine gunners probably are happy if they get something that light to carry, but I think I am glad the FDF chose the good old PKM as a replacement for the Valmet KvKK 62 instead of an oversized assault rifle.

Also, a whole lot more magazines. Plus, it should help to keep track of ammunition reserves, and being already loaded into a STANAG magazine means that the squadmates can much more easily share ammo in combat, instead of "Oh, lemme just take this round out of this disintegrating belt, and this round, and this round..." Anlushac, I think this means they'll still have the M240 (FN MAG 58) for their 7.62mm needs.

I always thought it was odd that the Navy put river operations by the wayside. You'd think Vietnam would have proved the importance of control of river ways. In countries without huge road or rail networks they are the only way to move large amounts of supplies long distance, and even if we control the road and rail ways in a given country the enemy can use rivers to move supplies. By the way, who else uses the SCAR? U.S. special forces,...

A bit surprising that the US doesn't choose an American company. Also strange that they replace a machine-gun with an assault rifle. If they do want to replace all of their rifles with 416s then this probably makes sense from a logistical point of view.

I haven't had time to read through this properly, but I would presume that the first thing you would want to do is to either lure the majority of the troops on the ridge away from the ridge, or at least to ascertain how many troops there are up there?

You know what strikes me about the liberation photos of Europe? So much manpower just sitting around living civilian lives; and it was the same in many other areas too. World War 2 was a gentleman's war in that it wasn't fought using the much nastier tactics Europeans had been using the world over for the past few hundred years. If you're going to go to war with a country you go to war to gain ...
